Route 571 Collision Between Car and Truck Leaves One Man Hospitalized

Westbound traffic detoured after 8 a.m. today

A collision between a car and truck on Route 571 near the closed the major road for more than a hour this morning, creating a detour for westbound traffic.

Chief Michael Mastronardy said the truck was traveling eastbound on Route 571, when a car exited from the apartment complex into the road around 8 a.m. today. The vehicles collided, and while the truck driver was not injured, the male driver of the car was airlifted to Jersey Shore Trauma Center in Neptune for serious injuries. Both drivers, whose names were not released, were the only occupants in the vehicles.

The incident was just east of Old Freehold Road, and extrication teams from and responded.

Toms River and East Dover First Aid treated the victim at the scene before the airlift to Neptune, said the police chief.

“Traffic was detoured as Route 571 westbound was closed for over an hour while emergency crews removed the victim and conducted their investigation into the accident,” he said. Traffic is now flowing freely in the area.

Traffic Safety Corporal Frank Palino and Lt. Michael Brosnan are leading the investigation along with and the New Jersey ’s truck unit.
