Service slowly returning to customers in Manchester and Lakehurst

Power appears to be returning to residents in Manchester and Lakehurst, slowly.

Data from JCP&L shows that 16,822 of the electric utility's 25,507 customers in Manchester have power, over two days after Hurricane Sandy struck. That's about 1,000 more than had power on Tuesday night. In Lakehurst, 680 customers are reported to be without power, down from 768 on Tuesday night. 

The utility company said in a release Wednesday that it has restored power to nearly 160,000, or about 20 percent, of its customers and expects to have the majority of customers restored within the next seven days.

It could take up to two weeks for customers in the hardest-hit areas to regain power, the company said.

JCP&L reported 940,999 of its nearly 1.1 million customers remained in the dark as of Wednesday night, according to its outage map. The number includes 264,061 in Monmouth; 202,655 in Ocean; 73,388 in Middlesex; 23,880 in Union; and 16,442 in Mercer.

"The damage from Hurricane Sandy far exceeds what we saw from Hurricane Irene or the October 2011 snowstorm," said JCP&L President Don Lynch in a release. "While we were better prepared for Hurricane Sandy, the damage rivals that experienced during Hurricane Katrina, one of our nation’s most devastating and expensive hurricanes."

The Lakehurst Volunteer Fire Company invited residents to its headquarters Wednesday night to recharge cell phones, take a warm shower and have some coffee. Turnout was light, as fire officials said it was difficult to alert residents to the event since the reverse 9-1-1 system currently does not work. 

Other notes:

Manchester and Lakehurst schools are closed through the rest of the week.

Lakehurst Borough Hall is open; Manchester Municipal Complex is expected to reopen on Thursday.

This is monday night, one week after the storm took down various trees in our neighborhood of Cedar Glen West, a Senior citizen community and still no power or any idea when it may come back up. Now, we have another n'easter storm coming our way and we pray that we'll be able to survive. Six to eight people have been transported to hospitals since Hurricane Sandy has struck because they didn't have the electric power they need to run their oxygen supply and or other health issue's. What are they doing with the portable generators that nationwide Truck Drivers have been bringing and dropping off at the naval air station. I understand that one generator would supply enough power to light a small community, I am mad as hell that JCP&L is dragging their butts with this.

Join the club, as we still have no power in a senior citizen community of 400 units with 180 units having no power or communication to the outside world. Great job JCP&L. hopefully none of your loved ones live here.

Whiting Station and The Meadows (+55 Adult Communities) were without power in a combined total of around 240 homes until yesterday (Tues Nov 6) around 12 noon. Trying to get any info out of JCP&L was impossible. We saw many trucks in our area of Whiting sent in from Asplundh and Nesco and other out of state repair crews not being permitted to work due to jurisdictional issues. They told us they could have had the problems fixed days earlier if the would only be allowed to do what they came to do and were eminently qualified to do. Once a JCP&L lineman finally got to our area on Tuesday 11/6 he managed to get the system running in about 1/2 hour. Something is very wrong with how JCP&L allocates resources and supervises the huge teams of outside help. I hope the BPU does a full objective investigation of JCP&L's handling of the situation.

Our power went out on Sunday night before the storm and was restored on 11/6 at 10:00pm. Only to go out again last night Wednesday 11/7 at 9:00pm . We were left with dangerous live wires on our homes and across the roadway on Partridge street and River a heavily traveled pedestrian and vehicle area for 9 days. We did not see help for 3 days. When the initial JCP&L worker arrived we learned that the Ground wire was broken and dangerous surges were coming through power lines into our homes and across the roadway. He instructed us to turn off breakers. The rest of the surrounding homes still had power. We begged the responding worker and made multiple telephone calls pleading for JCPL to shut our power down all requests were ignored. I truly believe that the JCP&L line workers are doing their best but the JCP&L management is incompetent and uncompassionate. God bless the men and women who left their homes and families to help us...West Virginia and Alabama crews are great Thank you...Ed
