With 102 suspected drunk drivers charged, a Toms River police officer led the state in DWI arrests in 2013.

Former Police Chief Michael Mastronardy made the announcement about Officer Robert Westfall's success hours before his retirement from the department on New Year's Eve. The previous year, Westfall led the county with 62 DWI arrests.

On Thursday, Westfall told WNBC-TV that he catches drunk drivers not by sitting outside of bars, but by patrolling the township's roads on the hunt for motorists who are failing to maintain their lanes or driving erratically.

Westfall told a WNBC reporter that he plans on keeping up his efforts to get drunk drivers off the roads "until the day I retire."

Kudos to Officer Westfall. However will the new Police Chief do anything about the many TR Police Officers that have not made an arrest or issued a traffic citation in years?
EducatedCitizen January 03, 2014 at 12:16 AM
Mark, I am interested to learn the names of the "many officers who have not made an arrest or issued a traffic summons in years. Please begin by at least naming five. We will be fair and call that "many", please name five patrol officers who have done neither in years. If you do not know submit an Opra request to TRPD for that data and enlighten us. Educate me so I can be informed on this topic.
EducatedCitizen January 03, 2014 at 12:17 AM
It is sad to know that many drunks have been arrested and that's one officer! Does anyone know how many TRPD had all together for 2013?
suz January 03, 2014 at 08:08 AM
Thank you for keeping me safe.
barbara January 03, 2014 at 08:54 AM
Way to go! Thank you and keep up the good work. Just sad that people drink and drive and never think of the consequences they could kill innocent people.
bob January 03, 2014 at 07:52 PM
I'm sure his mom is proud of him.

If this continues pretty soon it will become an Olympic Event.. Guess Officer Westfall should win the "GOLD." Wonder who'll win the Gold for getting Heroin Addicts... Seems to me there are many out there for the picking !!!
Joe January 05, 2014 at 08:44 AM
I understand we don't want drunk drivers on the road but, how many people were stopped for some other reason and found slightly impaired? The level has been set so low that you can't even drive home after a glass or two of wine with dinner. This guy is just being a JO. If he really cared he would call them a cab, not give them a DUI for minor test results.
Project Bluebeam January 05, 2014 at 05:13 PM
Slightly impaired is still impaired. Driving is a privilege not a right. Call cab? Not with my tax dollars, especially with the rise in break-ins, and shootings.

It's so good to hear that there are guys like Bob Westfall out there who really work at doing their jobs, and not just puttin' in time while waiting for a chance to get in on "some real action". Thanks Bob Westfall for taking seriously the oath to "serve and protect".
bob January 05, 2014 at 07:12 PM
Thanks Bob Westfall for helping mess up the lives of 102 people in 2013.
Proud Pappa January 05, 2014 at 07:23 PM
@ Bob...MESSING UP THEIR LIVES.??.you have got to be kidding me..if you are one of the 102 im glad u are..I am sure if one of these drunks that were missed killed a your son or daughter ( which i hope to god u do not reproduce) or other family member u would be 1st in line saying the cops dont do anything...GREAT JOB WESTFALL!!!!!!!!!!! \keep it up
bob January 05, 2014 at 07:59 PM
How about we give the death penalty for DUI's. You can ruin all the lives you want, people are still going to drink and drive.
ludwig solski January 05, 2014 at 08:07 PM
What a richardhead .Look at the picture of RH there is a second image in front of the image of the RH !! Can you see it ! It's the reall head of an RH....
ludwig solski January 05, 2014 at 08:14 PM
I would love to follow this guy around to some paddy bar ... watch him down 2 or 3 beers in an hour and make citizens arrest on him!
Gordo K January 05, 2014 at 08:22 PM
It looks like it's time for all the pissed off DWIers to come crawling out of their bottles!
bob January 05, 2014 at 08:25 PM
Nice try, but i don't drink.
bob January 05, 2014 at 08:26 PM
Why don't you follow some senior citizens around and see how they drive.
Peter Parker January 06, 2014 at 01:13 PM
Bob, If you get a DUI and kill someone, you should get the death penalty. In my book, its first degree murder. You knowingly go out drinking, you CHOOSE to get behind the wheel, you KNOW there is a chance you can hit someone, you DESERVE to be put to death. Messing up lives, that is the most ridiculous thing I have ever head. They messed up their own lives. They chose to drink and get behind the wheel.
suz January 06, 2014 at 01:19 PM
Exactly right Peter...be responsible for your actions and suffer the consequences.
EducatedCitizen January 07, 2014 at 11:48 AM
Where did Mark go? Its amazing, every time I call someone out on their BS, on this site..they disappear from the comments thread, until the next topic. As for Bob, the only person that "messed up a life" is the one who drank a drive. For your EDUCATION, drinking a "beer or two" will most likely not impair you, or put you over the limit. Again, request the records, review his files, and see what the BAC was on these people that endangered the lives of our family members!
bob January 07, 2014 at 11:59 AM
I never drank a drive, does it contain a lot of alcohol? BTW cops drink and drive on a regular basis, and i know that for a FACT.
ThudNJ January 07, 2014 at 12:17 PM
What getinvolved1 said is interesting. I wish there was a follow up story to see if it is true and also what the readings were on most of those convicted.
Doug Bennett January 22, 2014 at 03:26 PM
There was a time when TR Police used a little common sense instead of grandstanding like this clown. I wonder how many of those 102 arrests were legit and how many got thrown out. Been nice if there had been a camera in his car! TR cops these days are almost all grandstanding cowboys like this guy. Death penalty for drunk driving! We don't give the dp for murder in this state and morons talk that nonsense. It amazes me how many morons have moved to TR. They must still be drinking CIBA water!
Joey Joe January 22, 2014 at 05:20 PM
I'm sure the Waretown Cops are running a close second... They have nothing at all to do in town so they spend their time playing cowboy on Rt 9 and chasing people from the front of ShopRite...
Mister Matt February 01, 2014 at 03:41 PM
Waretown cops? Waretown is a section of Ocean Township like Forked River and Lanoka Harbor are sections of Lacey Township. There are no 'Waretown cops'.
Mister Matt February 01, 2014 at 03:44 PM
If they were borderline situations I feel bad for the drivers. As for the ones who were drunk and never should have been behind the wheel, well done officer and thank you.
EducatedCitizen February 11, 2014 at 11:18 PM
He has/had a camera you uneducated Doug Bennett. And remember fools, tipsy driving is drunk driving.
Joey Joe February 12, 2014 at 08:31 AM
@Mister Matt - obviously you knew what I meant... Waretown / Ocean Twp same thing... Bottom line the PD in that one horse town are the most nasty I've ever come across... WHen one of them pulls up next to me and hollers "move your F'ing Car I call that nasty...and totally uncalled for... JUST SAYIN...
