A Toms River man died after his car left the roadway on Route 9 Monday night and crashed into a tree.

Richard C Bitterle III, 22, of Larch Drive, was traveling northbound on Route 9 at 10:48 pm in a 2013 Kia when he crossed over the center yellow lines for an undetermined reason, said police spokesman Ralph Stocco.

The car then left the roadway and struck a tree just north of Sunset Avenue, Stocco said.

Members of the Pleasant Plains and Silverton Fire companies responded and extricated Bitterle from his vehicle and he was transported to Community Medical Center where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The investigation is led by Toms River Police Traffic Officers Mark Nater and David Bartoshek. Investigator Matthew Scutti of the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department provided additional investigative assistance.

@Genrl Quarters... guess the sensitivity gene missed you huh? Assuming she has ever read a newspaper, are you freaking serious? She, like most normal human beings, feel a need to understand as best they can when a tragic event happens in their lives, you on the other hand could never comprehend that. Did I wish she never saw this picture ? you bet, but she did and yes that is the Patch's right, she understands that.... however it does not minimize the effect it had. Tell ya what, I just came from the afternoon viewing, how about you get your ignorant ass to the 7-9 one tonight... Silverton Memorial Funeral Home. See for your self the realty of what happened. Karma... it's a bitch and has a way of showing up when ya least expect it. Good luck with your 'life'

Some people here on Patch really need to grow up; show some respect~ a life has been lost!

@De Lucia....respect is something that's earned. While indeed it's a tragedy that someone killed them self in a car accident, you need to remember that this is a news source blog, with most people not knowing the deceased, and as such purely commenting on the aspects of what happened. People like you that knew the deceased would better be served by avoiding these sites and instead commenting on the deceased person's funeral home's 'tribute page'. So, it's not really a thing of people needing to "grow up" (in your words)...it's more about being appropriate....and on a news source site like this, most comments that discuss the event are appropriate as long as profanity is not used.

@Genrl Quarters... Actually, I did not know the deceased young man, but regardless, my thoughts & prayers go out to him and to his family! Moreover, I certainly agree that respect has to be earned! When I said that some people need to grow up, my thoughts were directed at the idiots that use this site to bash one another. I am a retired Photojournalist with tons of published works to my credit and so therefore, I can assure you that I do know & respect what "accurately reporting the news" is all about and I have no problem with the way Patch goes about doing what they do. As far as I'm concerned, photos are part of the news.
