Toms River Man Arrested for Firing Shots in Domestic Dispute

Early morning incident leads to arrest of local man

A Toms River man was arrested early Sunday for firing shots into the air during a domestic dispute, police said.

Delovi Canales Jr., 27, of Albert Avenue, was arguing with a woman on the front lawn of the Walnut Bay Apartment Complex on Walnut Street when he fired several rounds from a .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun into the air, said Police Chief Mitch Little.

Police were called to the complex at 3:49 a.m., Little said. Investigating officers found that Canales was brought to the complex by a friend and eventually began arguing with the female and asking her to leave with him. During the incident, Little said, Canales displayed a black semi-automatic handgun that he had tucked in his waistband and made "threatening remarks."

After the shots were fired, Ptl. Sean Smith, Ptl. Eric Harris and several other Toms River officers responded to the area, and Canales was located a short time later at his residence and was placed under arrest, said Little.

Detective Roger Hull headed the investigation and charged Canales with making terroristic threats; unlawful possession of a weapon; possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes; and possession of a weapon by a certain person prohibited from having a weapon.

He is being housed at the Ocean County Jail on $150,000 bail. A photo of Canales was not available.

Christie has nothing to do with TR even though most everyone voted him in. However this town is becoming Lakewood south. Lets get the gates built before it's too late.

Thank the Democrats for making every town have low income housing.

Lets add low cost housing more on rt 9 and whitty road. I'd love to see more bodegas and stores starting with "la" and "el". Then we can be considered a 3% tax zone. What a joke this town is becoming.

A" bigger" question for Chief Little. Was the guy a legal hand gun owner of the 40. semi-automatic, obtained in NJ the legal way?.

This "low income housing" has been in Toms River for 30+ years, so you people acting like this is some new development is absurd. This guy fired his gun in the air. A white guy living in a "nice area" left his arsenal out in his home and it resulted in his son killing the boy next door. But you people have no problem with that because he had the "legal" right to own those guns.

JFTR Apples & Oranges. The "white" guy you mentioned was negligent and wrong but did not intentionally use a firearm. Now to the point of why did you point out he was "white"? You must be some type of racist or bigot. Why else would you introduce this argument?

I was just about to fall asleep when I heard those shots the other night. We have a house on Park Crest. It's scary, being so close to home. One night, last year, a man just walked right into my house. He was intoxicated, but I was able to convince him he was in the wrong house. Needless to say, I always lock my doors now!
