Toms River Man Arrested On Child Sex Assault Charge Awaits Arraignment

Man accused of streaming sexual assault of 14-month-old boy on the Internet

A Toms River man's arraignment has yet to be scheduled, for charges he taped a sexual assault of a 14-month-old he was babysitting.

Rodford W. Brindley, 67, of Toms River appeared before Judge Lois Goodman in federal court Wednesday to answer a charge of sexual exploitation of a child, U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman said in a release.

According to the criminal complaint filed in , a special agent with the FBI attests that Brindley sexually assaulted the boy and streamed footage of the alleged attack over the Internet while believing he was speaking to a woman in Ohio who was in fact an undercover detective with the Westerville Police Department.

According to the criminal complaint, Brindley allegedly engaged in masturbation and oral sex with the boy, less than 2 years old, and streamed the act online via a live chat with an undercover officer on April 2.

U.S. District Attorney's Office spokesperson Matthew Reilly said yesterday's court appearance was to process Brindley's arrest.

"The proceeding before the judge was just his initial appearance – just to hear the charge read, be advised of his rights, discuss bail," Reilly said. "No plea is entered at this time. That will be at an arraignment, to be scheduled."

Brindley is charged with one count of sexual exploitation of a child, a federal charge that carries a possible 30-year sentence.
