Toms River Man Assaulted Cops, Indictment Charges

Ocean County grand juries hand up indictments

A resident armed with weapons faces charges for allegedly assaulting two police officers, according to an indictment returned last week by an grand jury.

Matthew D. Chadwick, 19, of Dover Street was in possession of a hunting knife and a folding knife Aug. 16 when he assaulted two officers in the township, the indictment states.

Chadwick was charged with two counts of fourth-degree aggravated assault, second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon.

He was initially jailed on $10,000 bail but posted Aug. 19.

But of course no one will ever hear the side of the story from the eyes of the accused. Barely a week prior my grandfather had passed away, that hunting knife was one of my favorite gifts from him. He had used it when he was young, and having grown up in scouting reaching the rank of Eagle scout I have a particular appreciation for tools such as that, which was the reason for the other knife I carried. That knife was the knife I'd used through my scouting carrier, obviously not as a Cub, but i still held meaning. As it was I was being kicked out of my house for a family dispute, I rarely left home without a pocket knife, especially when I didn't know where I was going to be staying. The police were called as a result of my family's fighting, and as they arrived I was already leaving, a block and a half from my house. I saw the cars pulling up and rather than making them search for them I took the knives out of my bag containing my work clothes and belongings held them up, dropped them, stepped away, and held my hands in the air. I was unaware that was considered "aggravated assault." I didn't find out for almost 8 hours what I was being held on, or charged with, in fact it was over 24 hours before I was even read my rights. I sat in holding for 5 hours before being transferred to county, before even knowing why I was going. Of course none of what I say would or will hold up in court, because I'm the defendant, I'm expected to lie to get myself out of things.

From matthew's aunt Do not ever use the passing of my father as an excuse for your actions. Your mother is an angel on earth and the only thing your parents could be fighting about is you.

Listen to Deborah. What would Pop think about all of this? He passed more than a month prior to your arrest. He was always so proud of you. Do you think he would have been proud of you if he knew about this or some of the other activities you have hidden from your parents? Be strong, pick yourself up and have a happy and successful life.

Deborah Lee and Nancy need to grow up and get real. Not everything you read is true. What is true is that neither one of Matthew's aunts wished their dying father a Happy Father's Day on the last one he had in the hospital. He still understood what was happening. I was there the whole day and not one word from either one of them was heard. Deborah Lee had not even seen or spoken to our father for at least ten years. Matthew knew his grandfather all of his life. The last phone call he had with him lasted two and a half hours. That is a lot longer than either one of them spent talking to our father in at least a decade or so.
