Toms River police are looking for a man who is accused of shoplifting items from the township's Kohl's store.

Officers began investigating the alleged theft July 1, when they were called to the store after loss prevention officers there told police they observed a man on surveillance camera walking through the store, taking items off of the rack in the men's department and placing them in a shopping bag, police spokesman Ralph Stocco said.

The man walked past the registers and exited the store without paying for the merchandise, the video showed, but when the man was approached by the loss prevention officers, he dropped the merchandise and fled, Stocco said.

The recovered merchandise is valued at $539, according to Stocco.

Township police are asking anyone who recognizes the suspect seen in the surveillance footage image attached to this story to contact Detective Roger Hull at 732-349-0150 extension 1291 or private message the department at https://www.facebook.com/tomsriverpolice.

I feel a certain saddness for this guy. I know stealing is wrong and he certainly picked off a lot of stuff but he seems to be homeless or very, very poor. Now if they catch him at least he will have a cot and three hots for a few months. But addressing homelessness is taboo and I know it's off topic here. But he seems to represent that part of society and it's neediness. Stealing certainly isn't the answer but I still feel a sense of sadness about him. If he stole less maybe he wouldn't have gotten himself caught on camera like this either or had loss prevention chasing him through the parking lot. Desperation makes people do stupid things.
