Two Attacked by Pit Bull Pair, Dogs in Custody

Dogs now are in animal control custody, police said

A pair of dogs believed to have attacked residents Monday have been taken into the custody of township animal control.

A 45-year-old Cranmoor Drive man walking at about 6 a.m. Monday first was attacked by the two pit bulls, said Chief of Police Michael Mastronardy.

When a 60-year-old man on the street heard yelling, the dogs "suddenly charged and attacked him," the chief said.

"Both residents were treated at Community Medical Center for numerous lacerations as a result of the attacks," Mastronardy said.

Police were able to locate the dogs about two blocks east on Maple Avenue and they were taken into custody by animal control personnel, Mastronardy said.

On Sunday night, police received a call that the dogs almost attacked a resident on West Earl Court at 11 p.m. An hour earlier, the dogs were spotted by a caller who told police they were near the Route 37 Taco Bell, according to the chief.

The owner of the dogs, a Caldwell man staying on Money Island, reported the dogs missing to animal control on Sunday night, Mastronardy said.

Your right KD! SO when my neighbors beagle took a chunk out of my pitbulls nose...no damage done. It was my dogs fault bc he was a pit bull and that beagle could do no damage.
Kelly January 18, 2013 at 12:31 AM
Mrs. Retro, I agree and understand how you feel. I get harassed daily bc I own a pit bull to the point I am afraid to let him out in the back yard for more than 10 minutes bc he is a runner but has always got in the car with someone and doesnt show up for hours. I feel for the families affected but there is always two sides. I will go up to bat and know many others to find the exact truth to this story! Something doesnt seem right
Kelly January 18, 2013 at 12:32 AM
These dogs were killed it seems before anyone could tell there temperament

I just googled pit bull attacks and guess what? Another poor helpless person was just mauled by two of these wonderful loveable pets. Looks like several people each week are killed or almost mauled to death. Where are the put bull defenders out there? Maybe post some articles backing your claim that other breeds are just as dangerous. Time to put down all pit bulls so the breed can go extinct! URUPA VALLEY, Calif. (KABC) -- An 82-year-old woman is recovering after being mauled by two pit bulls while walking to check the mail in Jurupa Valley. Riverside County Department of Animal Services official Frank Corvino said the pit bull attack was unprovoked. "Apparently, she had just stepped out of her house to walk across the street to a community mailbox and that's when the dogs attacked," Corvino said. "It's not like they were protecting their litter or anything like that. Just two dogs, two dangerous dogs that got out, were not contained properly, got out and for whatever reason attacked this person."

I can't help myself. A 7 year old girl was mauled today by a pit bull and guess what the owner said...."the dog was never violent before" If you own a pit bull you are irresponsible and are putting your family in harms way. GREENWOOD, S.C. -- If it was not for a foot wrapped in bandages, you might not know six year old Kaylynne Byrd had the scare of her life this week. "We were just riding bikes," her father, Justin, remembers. "This man came walking down the street with the dog on a leash." Byrd says his daughter was still riding her bike further down the street when he stopped and greeted the man. "I asked him, does the dog bite? And he says, only if I tell it too. Within seconds, the Byrd's say the pit bull pounced on the child while she was still on her bike. Kaylynne remembers the attack. "He bit my ear and my daddy put me back on the bicycle and started going but then the dog got me again and got ahold of my foot." Byrd was able to pry the pit off his daughter, then rushed back to the family home where they called an ambulance. Kaylynne now has a bad gash in her foot with 8 stitches. Doctors say the dog also took a small piece of her ear off. "I just cried when I saw it," her mom Erica says. "You could see part of it gone, and I just thought, she shouldn't have to go through that," she says tearfully. Seven on your Side questioned the dog's owner, off camera, who said the dog had never been violent before.

Darius Tillman 15-days old | Kalamazoo, MI Darius Tillman, 15-days old, was mauled to death by the family pit bull as he lay sleeping. At the time of the incident, the victim's mother, his 2-year old sibling and two pet pit bulls were at the home. Police reported that the mother laid her infant down for a nap in a bassinette and fell asleep in another room. One of the pit bulls pushed open the bedroom door and mauled the baby to death. Animal control euthanized the young male dog after the incident. It's unknown what became of the second household pit bull. Jeff Hadley, Kalamazoo Public Safety Chief, called the incident a "tragic accident," echoing the same distortion voiced by pro-pit bull groups. About four months later, and after the Kalamazoo Gazette gained the final incident report under the state Freedom of Information Act, it was learned that detectives sought charges of involuntary manslaughter against the child's mother, Mallory Wildig, but the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office declined to pursue. Darla Napora, 32-years old, was mauled to death by one of her two pet pit bulls inside her Pacifica home. At the time attack, Darla was in her sixth month of pregnancy. Her husband, Greg Napora, returned from work that day at lunchtime and discovered her body on the floor with the couple's 2-year old male pit bull hovering over it. According to Greg, Darla was an avid fan of Bay Area Doglovers Responsible About Pit Bulls (Bad Rap). Greg did not explain why the couple had not neutered "Gunner," as strongly recommended by the group. The pair's other pit bull was a spayed female and was not involved in the attack. Twenty-four hours after her death, Greg delivered intolerable statements to the media including: 1.) "He doesn't blame the dog," 2.) It's "not the breed's fault," 3.) "[Pit bulls] are the most loving animals I have ever had in my life," and 4.) He "plans to bury his spouse, Darla, with their pet's cremated remains in her casket." His last statement, in particular, horrified citizens across the United States.[source citations]

I'd just like to comment to all you pit bull haters. What you see, hear, and have been led to believe about "pit bull viciousness" is a LIE. You have been influenced by a biased and frenzied media; a media who doesn't like to share the fact that America's favorite dog breed, the Golden Retriever, is responsible for the more dog bites than pits every year. I owned 3 dogs, up until a horrific groundhog attack took my toy poodle out of the picture the day after this Christmas. The other two are a West Highland Terrier and a pitty mix. I own my own home and my own business. I am well educated, well bathed, and I maintain my property well. I am ANYTHING but white trash. I could post hundreds of pictures and write an entire dissertion that would show you just what a sweet loving dog my pitty mix is, but it would do no good in convincing you ignorant people of the truth. In 39 years I've been bitten by only two dogs. One was a bassett hound and the other was a Lhapsa Apso.
DJ January 18, 2013 at 04:11 PM
Pitties, and EVERY dog, are ONLY a reflection of their owners. Are you aware that Petey the Puppy from the Little Rascals was a Pit? Betty Boop's cartoon dog companion was a pit. "According to the UKC,"This breed is eager to please and brimming over with enthusiasm. APBTs make excellent family companions and have always been noted for their love of children."" The Pit Bull was so respected in the early 1900's that the US Military chose an image of a Pit Bull to represent our country on war posters." Buster Brown's dog was also a pit. The Pit Bull is the only breed that has ever had the honor of making the cover of LifeMagazine three times. Hey, guess who else loved and relied on a pit bull...Helen Keller! Truth is You are brainwashed. Ban uneducated people and thugs from owning dogs. Stop going on some medieval witch hunt, when in the end, you will realized how misguided it is. The Pit Bull is NOT the problem. People are. I hope you all educate yourselves and God save the innocent dogs from your hysteria!
Matthew lawrence January 18, 2013 at 04:14 PM
That 60 year old man shouldn't have kicked bebe in the head. Dash was protecting his sister. I have known these dogs for a while and they wouldnt hurt a fly. This story is a cover up and the toms river police officer who shot these two beautiful dogs should be persecuted. Didn't hear that part now did ya????
Theresa robins January 18, 2013 at 11:52 PM
To blame is breed is to be racist. Most of you responding and calling Pitbull owners trash, YOU are the trash. Get off your high horse, and pull your heads out of your butts. You don't like Pitbulls because you think they're all dangerous, and typically, not though your own experience, but through stereotype and what media wants to feed you. I won't even waste my thoughts and knowledge of dog breeds and behavior on people such as yourselves. If you really want to judge this breed, go and buy yourself one as a puppy, raise it, train it, and be a RESPONSIBLE dog owner instead of an ignorant, arrogant, example of why the world has gone to crap, and than see how you really feel about these awesomely intelligent, loyal creatures . Than, research what breeds really bite most frequently and do the most damage.
Jaloney Caldwell January 19, 2013 at 04:37 AM
Good job Debbie Bell You illustrate the horrorific denial and selfishness of pitbull owners very well. Pitnutters are nuts.
Jaloney Caldwell January 19, 2013 at 04:42 AM
Debbie has no issues. She has brains and respect for others and their tissues. You are a dedicated pitbull nutter. Your life is wrapped up in a meaningless fad that is propelled and funded by wealthy dog fighters who just love you. You help keep this fad alive and you help keep the overbreeding going so over one million pitbulls die in shelters. Dog fighters are now impossible to find and prosecute with pitbulls in every nook and cranny. Oh what a pawn are you.. I guess you really HATE a lot of pitbulls.. or you have no conception of what you are really supporting? You think the Hollywood unreality shows peddling the dogs are reality? These folks are paid to promote pitbulls. T.V. stars promoted cigarettes for decades until the federal government stopped them. I guess you are not too wise.. It's all about money honey.. and you have bought the bait. Sad your critical thinking skills were not better so you did not help promote the cruelty and death of so many pitbulls.
Jaloney Caldwell January 19, 2013 at 04:44 AM
Debbie speaks truth. These people who have bought the pitbull lobbys lies about pitbulls and bought onto the fad are doing EXACTLY what the wealthy dog fighters that support the unreality t.v. shows want. They are making the dogs a fad, and making the overbreeding continue.. and taking the dogs into their homes so flushing out the big time dog fighters is now nearly impossible.

You Mr. Richard Beem are the low life here, You talk out of where your brain is and the area you sit on...I am a pit owner, my son's have one girl and one boy...we have three shitz a boos also...You are more likely to get bit by my little guy who doesn't like people leaving the house than either one of the pits...What a vile excuse for a human you are...I would really like to see you say what you said to the man in question or any other respectable pit owner....Maybe you should tell the actor Kevin Bacon that as well...his daughter has a pitty...They are lovable dogs...Oh and just for the sake of saying it , this man is a personal friend and his dog(s) are so well trained, the Dog whisperer couldn't have trained them better....They had to be provoked by the dumb ass human....You are a disgusting profiler....and you need to be put down....Karmas a bitch you will get what coming to you...can't wait to tell this distraught dog owner about you and I hope he finds you....
Francine Seragusa January 19, 2013 at 02:53 PM
Debbie, loving your dog is great, but the way you talk you only confirm the craziness of that man richard beem...you are the type of person he speaks of....have two pitts and love them to pieces and I hate when they even play hard...they are great dogs and don't have their ears cropped...you really need to take it down a notch....
Francine Seragusa January 19, 2013 at 04:56 PM
i am francine seragusa's (above) daughter in law and as she has said in earlier comments we have two pitbulls, a girl and a boy, also 3 shitzu poodles. rachett ,my boyfriend and i pit, is 2 years old and is still very hyper but loves when our friends come over, especially girls. rachett gets mad when people leave the house so he barks at them either walking out of the gate or out the front door. the other day he pulled our comforter into his crate and shredded it because he was pissed we weren't home yet lol. simba our brothers girl pit is the complete opposite of rachett, she jumps at the sound of rachy running into the backdoor cause he wants to come in and hides upstairs if someone in the house raises their voices about something. simba is our angel. and now for the 3 little shitz, they all have there own personality as well but buddy the youngest is by far the most aggressive dog in the house. he has a bad temper most of the time and almost knocks me over when i walk in the house by his little claws digging into my skin. hes kinda like dr. jeckyl and mr. hyde. buddy and rachett do not get along as you can come to understand by reading a little about them so we keep them separated. what im trying to get you to understand is that all dogs like humans have their faults some worse then others.do i think killing all of the pitbulls is going to solve anything, NO. just like taking all the guns away isn't going to stop people from killing. its the owners not the breed
Lou Cando January 20, 2013 at 02:14 PM
Not for nothing but i wonder if the location of the attack had anything to do with the decision to euthenize?
holden2112 January 20, 2013 at 03:30 PM
I guess all of you delusional pit bull owners will never get it. I dont care about which breed bites the most. What I care about is what breed kills, mauls and permanently disfigures infants, children and the helpless old people. If someone's labrador retriever bites my daughter it will hurt and maybe need a stitch or two but she wont be mauled to death or have her face permanently disfigured.
holden2112 January 20, 2013 at 03:32 PM
DJ, since you fail to provide any real facts. Let's try these. Every 21 days a pit bull kills an innocent person. The Pit Bill is not the problem? All Pitts should be euthanized now. Report: U.S. Dog Bite Fatalities January 2006 to December 2008 A 2009 report issued by DogsBite.org shows that 19 dog breeds contributed to 88 deaths in a recent 3-year period. Pit bulls accounted for 59% followed by rottweilers with 14%. Of the 88 fatal dog attacks recorded by DogsBite.org, pit bull type dogs were responsible for 59% (52). This is equivalent to a pit bull killing a U.S. citizen every 21 days during this 3-year period. The data also shows that pit bulls commit the vast majority of off-property attacks that result in death. Only 18% (16) of the attacks occurred off owner property, yet pit bulls were responsible for 81% (13).

Dear MOM, The dog owner reported his dogs missing Sunday night, (no time given) by 11PM police had received two calls from people stating sightings of the dogs...HERE IS A BIG QUESTION THAT I WANT ANSWER TO...Did the police contact the owner, did they attempt to call Animal Control Sunday evening after getting two phone calls...AGAIN did they call the owner????? If in fact they did none of the above they are as responsible for the early Monday outcome as anyone else... ...I have a police scanner and hear calls on a daily basis about missing dogs, loose dogs and even sometimes pitbulls...even once when the police got a call that a pitty was spotted about three blocks from my house, the Police dept. called me and asked if all our dogs were accounted for...Knowing the character of the owner/man, he did not lay his head down and just go to sleep knowing his babies were lost...NOT ENOUGH WAS DONE PRIOR TO THESE SO CALLED MAULINGS ...."Both residents were treated at Community Medical Center for numerous lacerations as a result of the attacks," Mastronardy said. LACERATIONS DO NOT CONSTITUTE MAULING..... ... exactly who put the fear into your children....and why considering that by Monday night these dogs had been KILLED...unjustly...Do you drive a car....do you walk across a street....DO YOU TAKE A SHOWER.... ALL OF THESE ARE POTENTIAL DANGERS AND HAZARDS...DUMB DUMB DUMB...I have a plastic bubble for sale...you seem to be a good candidate for it....
Francine Seragusa January 20, 2013 at 04:33 PM
Mrs. Retro, I am glad that there is a voice for these dogs and the owner, I am a personal friend of the owner,(North Jersey) who has practiced nothing but the utmost care with these dogs, these dogs were his life, and I agree that there is something very wrong with this whole story...through personal connections...and differently than it has been reported...they may have been brought in to animal control, but they were already dead...shot....WAS THE OWNER CALLED LATE SUNDAY NIGHT WHEN THE TWO CALLS AND SIGHTINGS WERE REPORTED...????
Concerned Citizen January 31, 2013 at 02:10 AM
"Someone put the fear into them..." Not always, my son is afraid of loose dogs because at a young age he was terrorized by a pack of loose (wild) dogs. As a matter of fact he's afraid of almost any dog on the street even the ones that get walked past our Cranmoor Manor home on a leash. And with the Brown property nearby I can't tell you how many dogs are let loose to run on the street (and on my property) in our neighborhood. Owners are ultimately responsible for any breed of dog that is out in public. Just be considerate of others and follow the (leash) laws.
Irish Eyes January 31, 2013 at 01:50 PM
I felt the need to comment re: Mrs. Retro's plea that I not 'fabricate' a story concerning the severity of these men's injuries. Believe me, there is no fabrication. You are not privvy to the complete police report. The PD does not have to detail the entire incident and chose not to release the names of the victims. As for one man's laceration requiring stictches and their not knowing if the dogs bit the other man....the 'other' man was the first victim and his screams for help as he lay on the ground with TWO pit bulls biting him brought the other man out of his home. The first victim...big guy, much younger...suffered numerous puncture wounds on his body...teeth penetrated his clothing and skin. He was knocked to the ground as the dogs lunged at him...fractured hand. When the other man heard the screams, he ran from his house with a shovel and the dogs attacked him. He did require sutures for a severe laceration. The puncture wounds, while extremely painful are left to heal from the inside out with the help of daily antibiotics. Both men have kept a low profile and seemed more concerned about the number of children who would have been walking to their bus stop shortly. The emotional trauma from this is palpable for these men as well as for those who know them. They are good, kind decent men. I am a relative of the initial victim...he has been stoic and keeps a low profile. We want to move on but the healing will take time. No fabrication here...just facts.
M22 February 18, 2013 at 04:29 AM
Please...if they didn't report they were pitbulls this conversation wouldn't be going this far. My brother has a pitbull and it's the calmest dog ever. It's been attacked by other dogs and was abused. The dog won't do anything. I have a lab and if she felt threatened she would bite your before the pitbull would. So sad that you people are so ignorant as to the good the breed does. Sit at home and listen to the stories and judge. If you actually spent time around pitbulls you would all shut the hell up.
M22 February 19, 2013 at 05:15 AM
TRMan... Pitbulls were not bred for fighting. You should educate yourself and then comment.
M22 February 19, 2013 at 05:16 AM
I have been around Pitbulls my whole life. Never had an issue with one. It's all about how they are raised.
M22 February 19, 2013 at 05:20 AM
Those kids are afraid because of what you people told them. Give me a break with your nonsense. Seriously...kids feed off of the things adults tell them. My son has been around pitbulls his whole life and never had an issue, never been bitten or harmed. Those men could have been hurt by any type of dog that was not friendly. Give me a break....
M22 February 19, 2013 at 05:28 AM
Please educate yourself before you comment. Pitbulls do not attack or continue an attack because they taste blood. Another thing... if these dogs wanted the men dead they would have killed them. That was not their intention.
