UPDATE: Two Face Charges After Lying About Toms River Accident

Police: woman fled on foot from accident due to outstanding warrant

Two people are facing criminal charges after lying about a Toms River automobile accident, police said.

While investigating a minor accident near the intersection of Hooper Avenue and Route 37 Tuesday afternoon around 4 p.m., Officer Robert Westfall learned a female was driving the vehicle, then fled on foot, said Chief Michael Mastronardy.

But because Stefano Rea, 23, of Fountain Drive, originally told police he was driving the car, Westfall charged him with hindering apprehension and allowing an unlicensed driver to operate his vehicle, Mastronardy said.

Rea was released on a summons. The female, who police said left the scene due to outstanding warrant, is scheduled to be charged with numerous motor vehicle violations including failure to report an accident and leaving the scene.
