Two Trapped After Head-on Collision on Garfield Ave.

Accident occurred 6 p.m. Friday

A head-on collision Friday sent three to the hospital after 6 p.m., when two vehicles collided at Garfield Avenue near Route 37, said.

A Toyota SUV driven by Douglas Howard, 29, of Toms River, was headed north on Garfield Avenue toward Route 37, when a 1996 Honda headed south crossed the center line and entered northbound traffic.

The vehicles collided head on, said Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy.

Howard and his mother, Ann Marie Howard, 63, of Toms River, were trapped inside and East Dover Fire Company extricated them. Toms River Police EMS transported Douglas to Jersey Shore University Hospital, and East Dover First Aid Squad transported Ann Marie to Community Medical Center, police said.

The driver of the Honda — Brandon Levitt, 20, of Toms River — was not injured but a passenger in his vehicle was transported to Community Medical Center for a facial injury, Mastronardy said.

Traffic Safety Corporeal Gary Flynn and Sergeant Richard Ross are investigating.

What is happening with all of these head on collisions? I mean it is not like Garfield Ave. is a super highway. How fast was this kid going when he crossed the line???

The kid was probably changing his CD or texting.. Yeah, so I'm profiling!! It happened to me, kid said he was looking for his misplaced bottle of water!!

Well, it only takes a momentary distraction of ANY kind to veer off in either direction.... they both had passengers in their car, it could have been anything.

The driver of the Honda can be seen constantly speeding up and down Bay Avenue. It was only a matter of time before this kind of accident resulted.

I drove long distances (to see family in ny, go to dog shows, 8 hours each way twice in one wk to bring my show dog to be bred to a great dog, yes I got 2 champions of a litter of 4, im not a puppy mill) before I moved to toms river. Even 3 yrs in Belmar I was fine. Moved to Toms River and got really bad anxiety to drive. They drive like animals here and the rules of the road are so diff with all the no left turns and junk.yuck.
