Woman Charged with Theft, Asking for Refunds for Sandwiches She Never Ordered

A Toms River woman was charged with theft by deception, after she allegedly approached area sub shops claiming food she ate there made her ill and demanded a cash refund.

Michael Mastronardy said the woman never really ate anything and it was instead a ploy to get cash refunds.

The Thursday arrest came after an investigation by Toms River Police Officer Brian Jarka.

A local sub shop called police, suspicious of a woman who came to the store demanding refunds. Police said the Toms River sub shop — the business name was not released — was just one of many the woman allegedly targeted.

"The store owner became suspicious and contacted Officer Jarka after he learned this white blonde female was apparently doing this at many sub shops in the area including Brick and Point Pleasant," said Mastronardy.

After Jennifer Eberling, 34, of Greenview Way in Toms River, allegedly recieved an $18 refund, police charged her with one count of theft by deception.

Mastronardy said the investigation found she received the $18 refund after complaining about subs that she never purchased. Mastronardy said it was unknown what menu items the woman claimed to have ordered each time.

She was also held on a $150 warrant out of Brick and a $750 warrant out of Lakewood.  Mastronardy said the matter is still under investigation.
