August Special Primary Forces Council Meeting Date Change

Meeting date moved up one day to accommodate special election

A special primary vote scheduled for August is forcing a change to Toms River’s Township Council schedule.

The township’s governing body was set to hold a regular meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 13, but it has been moved to Monday, Aug. 12 to accommodate the primary vote for U.S. Senate candidates to replace late Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D).

The clerk’s office is required to be open until polls close, said township Clerk Mark Mutter, making the day too hectic for a council meeting.

“It would be impossible to run the elections and have the meeting at the same time,” said Mutter, who added that his office will be overseeing 63 election sites in Toms River on Aug. 13.

Council members will hold their meeting at its regular time and place, 6 p.m. in town hall.

Lautenberg’s seat is now held by Christie appointment state Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa, who has indicated he will not run in the Oct. 16 special election.
