Beach Closings This Weekend
Getting ready for a weekend at the beach? Not so fast. Make sure it's open first.
Every week from May to Labor Day, the Ocean County Health Department travels to each salt- and fresh-water location in the county to test them for bacteria.
The way the Ocean County Health Department measures the safety levels of swimming water is to take a weekly sample of water and examine the level of bacteria.
If there is a certain amount of bacteria per 100 milliliters of water, the health department takes daily samples until the bacteria is down to an acceptable level for swimming. Until then, they close the affected beach to swimming.

This weekend, only one beach is closed because of bacteria -- the lower beach at Deer Head Lake in Lacey Township.
Every place else looks to be in good shape.
