Bill for Cleanup of Fuel Leak at T.R. Public Works About $100K

Small leak was found in fuel storage tank that was being replaced

The cleanup costs for a small fuel leak discovered in Toms River's Township's public works yard turned out to be $109,522, officials said.

The Toms River Township council this week voted in favor of paying for the work completed by Aurora Environmental Inc., to remediate and test soil that had been exposed to fuel.

Township Administrator Paul Shives said crews discovered a leak in one of the underground gasoline tanks at the yard when it was replaced about six weeks ago.

The township immediately had the contaminated soil removed and the area tested, said Shives.

"It was not a lot [of fuel], but there is a protocol that we must follow," said Shives. "It had to be done on an emergent basis, since you can’t just leave that there."

Since the leak, the area has been tested and has determined to be free of contaminants.
