Changes Coming to Hooper Avenue Crossing Near Court House

Mid-street crosswalks to be removed

The familiar lighted, blinking crosswalks built into the middle of Hooper Avenue near the Ocean County courthouse and administration building will be eliminated within the next two weeks.

According to county officials, the mid-block crossings are being eliminated because of their age and some potential safety hazards that had resulted. The crossings had been located in the middle of Hooper Avenue, not an intersection, and lit up with flashing LED lights built into the roadway whenever a pedestrian entered a designated area.

Now, county officials will direct pedestrians to use the pedestrian bridge that connects the county's public parking garage and the courthouse, or the intersections with Washington Street and Madison Avenue to cross the four-lane roadway.

The crosswalk equipment is set to be removed this coming weekend, according to the county. The county will also make additional repairs to the street in the area of the courthouse and will mill and pave the roadway.

Ocean County Sheriff's officers are helping direct pedestrians in the mean time.
