County Joins Site In Hopes of Keeping Items Out of Landfill

Website focuses on giving away or selling items

Move over Craigslist, Ocean County is offering a free way to give away or sell unwanted household items, too.

The new online service is free. The only money that changes hands is between the buyer and the seller, according to Freeholder James F. Lacey. Ocean is the first county in the state to add the 2Good2Waste wrinkle to its recycling arsenal.

Lacey said the addition allows people with items to sell or give away to connect with those who want them, keeping items from lawn mowers to furniture out of the Ocean County Landfill in Manchester Township.

There is a limit of  $99 on the asking price for items, and the site administrator reviews postings to see that “nothing inappropriate will be posted,’’ according to Lacey.

Buyers and sellers create accounts on the website at http://www.2good2waste.org/oceancountynj/. Environmental events for things  such as community cleanups and town wide yard sales can be posted as well.

Lacey said eight other states are involved in the recycling effort. The only ones in the northeast were Massachusetts and Rhode Island before Ocean County added New Jersey to the map.
