County Schedules More Hazardous Waste Collection Dates

Hurricane Sandy's impact has created a need for more dates, freeholder says

Ocean County residents who have paint cans, cleaners or other products that need careful disposal will have the opportunity to dispose of those products in the coming days.

"In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy and with so many homes having suffered water damage resulting in houses being emptied out in order to begin repairs, there is a need for these additional collection days," said Freeholder James F. Lacey, liaison to the county Department of Solid Waste management.

Registration and proof of residency are required to drop off items. Register by calling the following numbers for the dropoff sites:

  • Toms River site, call 732-367-0802
  • Brick, Lacey sites: 732-506-5047
  • Stafford, Little Egg Harbor: 609-978-0913

The dates and sites:

  • Dec. 8: Toms River Recycling Center, 1672 Church Road, Toms River, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Dec. 13: Little Egg Harbor Public Works Yard, 1363 Route 539, Little Egg Harbor, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Dec. 14: Lacey Township Recycling Center, 820 Municipal Lane, Lacey, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Dec. 15: Ocean County Southern Recycling Complex, 379 Haywood Road, Stafford, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Dec. 15: Brick Township High School, 346 Chambersbridge Road, Brick, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Materials accepted at the sites include paints/thinners; solvents; pool chemicals; pesticides and herbicides; aerosol cans; auto products; toilet and drain cleaners; polishes; oven cleaners; rug and upholstery cleaners; bleaches, and waste oil and gasoline. All but the waste oil and gasoline must be in their original containers.

So if you know something is hazardous but not in the original container then what? Dump it down a storm drain? Original container could have been damaged and was leaking.

Yes that's the problem bro They won't take it so what do you do with it then It sits in your garage till the day you die Then your kids sit on it or dump illegally Great solution If its not in the original container..... Thanks for the help Hey is this being flagged as inappropriate?

My advice would be to call your recycling center and explain your situation. Perhaps they have an answer for you.

EMC: That would be too logical and sensible to ask the people doing the collecting for advice! Some people just like to groan and complain, so it's easier to come on here and complain and find the negative aspect in everything someone does or offers ;)

My experience with these sites has not been pleasant. I had to make an appointment for a specific day and time. It was a big deal for them when I showed up early even though they were not busy. Then the guy gives me a hard time because the label had fallen off the original container. He did me a big favor and took it anyway. Gee, thanks buddy. Next time I'll toss it in with my regular garbage.

RE jerseyswamp Ill type very slow so you can follow. The reason they want the original label is so they know what it is. There’s a big difference on how they have to handle DDT or sevin. (2 dramatically different pesticides) not to mention the possibility of chemical reaction b/w different chemicals not to mention the fed regs for tracking these & how they are treated or handled in case of an emergency.

T h a n k s f o r g o i n g s l o w . I know that. My complaint is their attitude. At least the attitude of the guy I saw. I knew what was in the old rusted container. I explained that to the guy. He started to insist he would not take it. A lot of garages, basements and crawl spaces were flooded. Cans were knocked around in flooded waters. Labels get washed off. The notice above says "All ... MUST be in the original containers". Doesn't sound like they want to negotiate.
