Don't Flush! Barrier Island Residents Warned of Strained Sewers

Toms River officials tell barrier island residents not to flush toilets, take baths and showers or use washing machines.

Toms River officials urged Ocean County barrier islands residents and visitors not to flush toilets, take baths and showers or use washing machines or dishwashers because the wastewater could strain disabled or broken sewer systems.

Residents are allowed in the barrier island communities for brief periods to clean up and get personal items.

The discharge into the sewer system may "cause environmental damage and back up sewage in homes," according to Toms River's Website.

Sewer utilities are working with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection to assess the conditions of water treatment systems and what repairs are necessary to restore service, the township said.

Hmm...If the island "remains under mandatory evacuation", why would this announcement be necessary?

If there's no power or gas service, how could you use a dishwasher or a washing machine? Would anyone really want to take a shower or bath in cold water only? This is getting stupid already...

Because they are letting people on to the island for brief periods to clean up and get personal affects.

From what I've been told by public works employees of the towns out there, there are hundreds of non essential people out there every day taking in the sites, taking pictures (non press) and doing some work on some homes. Even the New York Giants were out there for a photo op last week. You know how it works...it's all in who you know. But for the rest of us "it's far too dangerous"...

Why are you people so critical, the workers are just doing their job in informing people of possible future problems, and how to avoid them. They are on top of things

It's called a Barrier Island for a reason. Can't wait to watch shore property values drop.

Some of these comments are redicuicous! The township is taking precautions. My life hasn't been disrupted, but in some way this affects all of US. Have a heart to the ones who are cold and self centered,
