The House of Representatives has passed an amendment preventing funding for a new Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) round, effectively ensuring Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst will continue to operate.

Rep. Jon Runyan's office said Thursday that the amendment, proposed by Runyan, prohibits federal funds from being used to propose, plan for, or execute a new or additional BRAC process.

“This amendment is so important because it protects the jobs and missions at bases across the country, including Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst,” said Runyan, in a statement. “It is so important that we do all that we can to ensure that the Department of Defense does not move ahead with another round of BRAC at this time.”

The amendment was part of the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs and Related Agencies Appropriations Act and passed the House in a 416-1 vote.

The bill must still be passed by the U.S. Senate and signed by President Barack Obama before it becomes law.

Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst seems to be unique in that a US Army, Air Force and Navy base is owned by the USA, established and operational while connected to each other. To close this location seems to me to be short sighted. I would hope that Runyan's bill is successful.

I also hope it passes or this area is going to take a beating. The fact the our non military President has to sign it scares me.

This is a very important base to the northeast. It's employs a lot of civilians also. Let's hope this bill passes, but not so sure the commander-in-chief is on our side. Like the saying goes, "keep your friends close, but your enemies closer"!
