Intermediate North Prepares for Parkway Connector Road's Impact

School will see both ends of Intermediate North Way modified through major construction project

As the school year rolls on, Toms River Intermediate School North will have their surrounding area transformed, through the building of a mile-long access road that would directly connect Route 571 with exit 83 of the Garden State Parkway.

involves extending Intermediate North Way between Route 9 and Route 571, and expanding the existing northbound exit and entrance ramps at the Parkway. New signals will be installed at Intermediate North Way and Route 571, where the connector road meets Route 9, and the Parkway.

Route 571 will also be widened between Route 9 and the connector road as part of plans to improve Interchange 83, according to Freeholder John P. Kelly. Currently, the area is preserved forest surrounded by condominiums on Route 571. .

Officials from the Toms River Regional Schools District provided an update on how the junior high school will fare as the construction project continues.

“School officials have had several meetings and sustain ongoing communication with a variety of government agencies regarding this construction project,” said Tammi Millar, District Communications Coordinator for .

“We are all working cooperatively, with our primary focus being traffic and pedestrian safety both during and at the completion of this project. Our Board of Education has been and continues to be informed of the details of this construction project by the Buildings and Grounds Committee,” Millar added.

At the December Toms River Regional Board of Education meeting, a report of the Building and Grounds Committee said the district was actively monitoring the situation and hoping to gauge impact, with consideration to traffic counts for the roadway. The arrival and departure of bus travel, and student pedestrians, were also being looked at, according to the report.

On the subject of the new access road, all administrators from Toms River Intermediate School North referred their comments or inquiries to the office. Toms River Intermediate School North, formerly West, has been open since 1974 and serves a student population of well over 1,000.

The Old Freehold Road intersection with Intermediate North Way will also be modified, receiving a at that spot, according to the freeholder's approval.
