McGuckin Announces He'll Step Down as Council President Amid Assembly Run

'Limited amount of time to do both,' says McGuckin, who will stay on as council member.

Toms River Council President Gregory McGuckin, who has served as council president for the last seven years, announced tonight that this is the last council meeting he'll lead.

Instead, in order to handle the demands of his campaign for state Assembly, McGuckin said that in the next two weeks he will formally step down as the council president, serving as a council member for the remainder of his term.

McGuckin has won the Ocean County Republican Organization's endorsement for state Assembly in the recently redrawn 10th Legislative District.

"I'm not going anywhere, I am still serving on the council," McGuckin said. "But this is my last meeting as council president."

By the next council meeting, the council will chose a new council president, McGuckin said.

"By next meeting, someone else will be running the meeting," McGuckin said.

He thanked his fellow council members and the audience for working with him as council president.
