Pelican Island Residents: Go Now To Get Belongings

Access for Berkeley and Toms River residents of island granted today only; you must be off by 4 p.m.

Residents of Pelican Island -- both those from Berkeley and from Toms River -- have been granted permission to access the island to retrieve belongings, Berkeley Township officials said.

Berkeley Township Attorney Lauren Staiger said the decision, reached this afternoon, grants permission for residents to take one personal vehicle to their homes to collect belongings.

Residents must register at the Bellcrest Plaza on Fischer Boulevard in Toms River and must prove residency there or that they own a business there, Staiger said.

No sightseeing is permitted and all must be off Pelican Island by 4 p.m., Staiger said.

Unfortunately most of the "Dover Township Croud" (which I also like to be called rather then "Toms River") does not vote. We are just a cash cow for Toms River.I would like nothing better then to see all the good people of "The Barrier Island" that are currently under the reign of Toms River be able to form our own town and say "Good Bye" to the dairy farmers on the main land.

Tom, it's one thing to express your disdain for the local government, but making condescending remarks about "mainlanders" is uncalled for. Many of us are hosting and feeding barrier island evacuees.
