The same people who write press releases for a living - or take roll call at freeholder meetings - get paid more than many police officers, teachers and emergency personnel in Ocean County.

The Ocean County freeholder board has approved raises throughout 2014 that will bump the budget for salaries and wages to nearly $117 million, up $678,982 from 2013.

The list includes some of the most influential figures in county government, including: Ocean County Administrator Carl W. Block, from $165,000 to $167,475; Clerk of the Board Betty Vasil, rising to $108,380 from $106,778; and Director of Public Information Donna E. Flynn, whose salary rose from $113,875 to $115,583, according to The Asbury Park Press.
