Regular Republican Club President Chosen for Township Council Seat

Al Manforti sworn in as township councilman last night, filling Donohue-Appleby's vacancy

Toms River Township Council unanimously chose Toms River Regular Republican Club President Alfonso Manforti to fill the vacancy created by the .

Manforti, a local chiropractor, will serve the remainder of Donohue-Appleby’s term, which ends in November.

The Toms River Regular Republican Club nominated local attorneys Mary Calvetto and Dennis Kelly, and Manforti, each of whom were interviewed after last night’s township council meeting.

Councilman Greg McGuckin said all the candidates were excellent choices.

“We had the opportunity to interview three excellent candidates. These three individuals have a keen interest in their community. I’ve been impressed by the amount of service they already have here in the community. They are all great names, but unfortunately we can only chose one,” McGuckin said.

He nominated Manforti, and the vote was unanimous.

Manforti was sworn in thereafter and briefly spoke before the council, thanking them for the opportunity.

“I’ve been a resident of Toms River for 50 years. I love it here and I am grateful to serve on the town council,” Manforti said.

Donohue-Appleby resigned June 29 after the Senate Judiciary Committee and Senate confirmed her judgeship as a Superior Court judge in the Ocean County Courthouse. She was nominated in June by Gov. Chris Christie.

The Toms River Regular Republican Club will meet Saturday to discuss the candidates interested in running for Donohue-Appleby’s spot on the November ballot.
