State Advances Roadwork Projects in Ocean County

Major bridges on list of projects

State transportation projects in Ocean County got a bump to the front of the line, with the department of transportation announcing today nine projects in the county will advance with $26 million to fund them.

The projects range from bridgework on Routes 37, 72 and 88, to construction of a bypass road in Berkeley to relieve Rout 9 congestion.

The work is part of the proposed $3.5 billion FY 12 Transportation Capital Program, according to a state DOT statement released this afternoon.

The nine projects:

$7.3 million, improvements at the intersection of Route 9 with Lacey Road in Lacey Township.

$6.9 million, continue replacement of the Route 37 eastbound Mathis Bridge over the Barnegat Bay, connecting Toms River to Seaside Heights.

$3.2 million to advance a pavement restoration and drainage improvement project on Route 35 in multiple municipalities in Ocean County. Route 35 in Ocean County stretches from Point Pleasant Beach down the barrier island of Barnegat Bay, into Island Beach State Park.

$2.8 million to advance a new bypass roadway to relieve congestion off of Route 9 in Berkeley Township. The roadway is one lane in each direction at that point of Route 9.

$2.4 million to advance the rehabilitation of the Route 72 Manahawkin Bay bridges connecting Stafford Township and Ship Bottom. The Causeway Bridge was built in 1950.

$1.5 million for a storm water basin study within the Barnegat Bay Watershed, affecting both inland and waterfront towns in Ocean County.

$500,000 to advance a project to replace the Route 88 bridge over Beaver Dam Creek in Brick Township. The state is currently repairing the portion of the highway over Point Pleasant bridge.

$500,000 to advance a project to replace the Route 9 bridge over Waretown Creek in Ocean Township.

$500,000 to advance a safety improvement project along County Route 571 in Jackson Township.

“New Jersey’s transportation system helps drive our economy,” Governor Chris Christie said in a prepared statement.  “The projects being funded in the FY 12 capital program reflect our focus on maintaining road, bridge and transit assets in a state of good repair and will benefit residents in every county throughout the state.”
