Tax Assistance Events for Sandy-Affected Areas

The free events are designed help individuals and businesses prepare their 2012 tax returns.

The State's Treasury Department's Division of Taxation has organized a number of tax assistance outreach events throughout February and March in towns affected by Hurricane Sandy, Gov. Chris Christie's office announced Thursday.

The events, scheduled during the height of tax season, are being held in towns that suffered heavy damage during Sandy as well as adjacent municipalities. The events will be located at libraries or other public buildings.

The events are scattered throughout Monmouth, Ocean and Bergen Counties.

The tax assistance events are free and residents can register online by visiting https://www.state.nj.us/treas/taxation/contactus_tytstormsandyrelief.shtml.. Residents can also email outreach.tax@treas.state.nj.us or call 609-633-6015 and leave a message, according to a release.

Experts will be on hand to assist residents with inquiries on how to report Sandy-related personal and business losses on their federal and New Jersey tax returns, as well as how to deal with property tax issues caused by Sandy-related property damage. Advice on how to recover lost tax tax documents or reconstruct lost personal or business records, as well as advice on other topics, will be available.

The events are supported by the AARP's Tax-Aide program and the IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.

For a list of event dates, times and locations, see below.

How do I get a discount on my property taxes now that my property has lost 1/2 its value?
Chief Wahoo February 8, 2013 at 05:32 pm

You can appeal your taxes, but the Sandy damage wouldn't apply until next year. You could appeal this year based on the valuation of the home, which is probably 25 to 30 % below it's fair market value.

Funny the only 3 saturdays location - that are available for people are up in Fairview, Ridgefield, + Sea Bright.? people have to work here in Brick, why are'nt there anything here in Brick to help people. Why don't they offer how- to guild how to apeal your taxes, someone should be offering that now. because, yes, your taxes are going up this year, but next year, your going to get slammed. you want to file now, apeal now.

Great story! Glad to hear your on your way back. Also happy to see someone else noticing that inRead More some places it still looks like Sandy hit yesterday. Some mayors might consider that "complaining".
