Toms River and Hurricane Sandy: Saturday Updates

Updates on water, power, donations

An update from Toms River Office of Emergency Management Paul Daley:

Town Hall is closed due to lack of power and will re-open Monday November 5th with the assistance of a generator.  Officials are working around the clock to aid residents.  Periodic updates will be made available via the media and on the township website.

FEMA representatives from the Community Relations Team in NJ will be in the Toms River area wearing blue shirts, FEMA Logos and FEMA credentials to render assistance.

To contact FEMA, use their website at www.FEMA.gov or call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362)

Toms River Engineers will be out to help inspect sites, and assessments will be made quickly so that businesses can open and homeowners can return to their houses.

Garbage and Recycling Collection

The Department of Public Works will resume a normal schedule starting Monday, November 5th.  There WILL be garbage pick up on Election Day.

Leave all brush and debris on your curb to be picked up.  Other than hazardous waste and pilings, all bulk items will be accepted.  Anything that was exposed to salt water will corrode and should be replaced quickly to prevent mold build up.

JCP&L is focusing on the mainland areas to restore electricity.  Residents can expect to see power restored to homes and businesses along the Route 37 corridor first.  JCP&L currently has 4,000 people on the ground working to get power lines restored.

As of today, only 2 shelters are in operation, HS North (County Shelter) and HS East (Toms River Shelter).  Residents that are being housed in shelters may need to be transported to a Burlington County shelter long-term, or find temporary housing in the area.  More updates will be provided daily.

Beach Residents

We are currently developing a plan for residents of the barrier island to be able to visit their homes in the near future but only with a Police escort.  Downed power lines, large amounts of sand in the roads, and massive debris prevent people from traveling safely through the area.  Residents of Ortley Beach will NOT be allowed to live in their homes because the gas lines will be shut off to the entire barrier island.

The Board of Public Utilities, said that the Natural Gas system is so compromised that it must be shut off.  From Mantoloking to Seaside Park, the complete system must be abandoned and rebuilt.  It could be a month, at best, before homeowners can reuse gas stoves.  We need to shut off and purge the system, and all of that gas must be released into the air.  A plume of methane gas will be in air.  It’s not dangerous, but there will be a foul smell.

Anti Looting Patrols

We encourage all residents to stay away from storm affected areas in order to allow emergency workers to continue their efforts.  Extra police patrols have been initiated to combat any possible looting or other criminal behavior.  Police check points have been established to identify residents in affected areas on the mainland.

Toms River Regional Schools Superintendant Frank Roselli said that Toms River Regional Schools would be closed through next week, November 5-9.  Students will only miss two more days of school, because classes were not scheduled on Election Day and on November 8 & 9 for an NJEA conference.

Donations of cash can be sent to the “Toms River Police Foundation”  PO Box 876 Toms River NJ 08754.

Donations of clothes, food and other items should be directed to representatives of the Red Cross or Salvation Army.

Water and Ice

A large delivery of water and ice was delivered and will be available to the public in need after 1pm Friday November 2nd at Toms River Public Works Church/N. Bay Ave. and all of the township fire stations.

Governor Chris Christie has designated Monday, November 5th for trick-or-treating.

For non-emergencies and questions about road closures, contact the Toms River Police Department at 732-349-0150 Ext. 1920.

I'm off fisher begins the bellcrest plaza bk n old closed food town. It's frustrating; I JNOW it could be worse than spending all my money feeding my kids out and batteries we could get etc and TG for 4 seasons and rite aid and their generators. 4 seasons owners and staff are VERY helpful and generous helong in any way they could. There are outlets by some of the fabled n. they let you charge not just out phones but my nook with glow light. Having said that the extra weird part is my neighbor 2 houses down on my st and the st perpendicular some of them have power. For days already since wed n thurs. wtf? I know we aren't in same grid and not surprised as we lost power Sun too due to car accident putting pole down few hrs and and same neighbor was not affected but aren't they going in any kind of order? Or maybe they're assuming neighbors would help ea other. Bahaha I'm the only idiot who would've had the neighborhood on my couch. The kids at least. Im grateful my kids are in ny now bc they were getting sick but I have family pressuring me to leave and I don't want to leave my pets now that the kids are safe. Did y know a cats ears could get cold?? Sorry today's the first morning I broke down n cried n prayed lol I guess I wish we KNEW more vs maybe a month prob under a wk more now and had to vent.

There are many houses in foreclosures. Why can't we sign some papers,or get some lawyers to volunteer their time, and use them for these devasted families?.They may not be furnished, but at least there is heat, hot water, and a roof! If we all chip in to make it livable,we can do our part to help. LET'S NOT HAVE ANOTHER EMBARRASSING KATRINA!!!

I read that there is a need for baby supplies at the Toms River East shelter. Please let me know if that is true as of today, what is most needed for babies, and whether supplies can be delivered there by UPS under current conditions and I will place an order. Thank you.

Hi. Message for Dainty or anyone from Toms River area? I'm in the UK and trying to find out if a relative is ok. She lives in Spanish Wellls Street and wondering how much damage there is there? I'm hoping she went to her son's place but unable to get through to anyone. Any info would be gratefully received as frantic here. Hope things get sorted for you soon. Can only try to imagine what you're going through. Thanks in advance. Claire

CLAIRE H. -- Spanish Wells St is not far from me in the Holiday City retirement community. If you check back here about 3:00 PM I will let you know if there is power restored in that area.... If anyone else wants to give me the addresses of senior citizens they would like to check up on in the HOLIDAY CITY @Berkeley community in TOMS RIVER I would be glad to make a list and go check for you....

Mattie November 04, 2012 at 07:46 PM
Claire... I just got back from Spanish Wells.... they DO have power. I spoke to someone who was outside cleaning up their yard and he said they had power restored since late Wed. afternoon. The street itself looks good, there were two trees that came down, but they were already cleaned up - cut and stacked at the curb. A few houses lost some roof shingles, but there was absolutely NO flooding issues in that area at all. I didn't see your post before I left, so I didn't check on #24 specifically. There were several houses on that street that looked closed up and dark, so there's a good chance Eileen is at her son's house?? But if she's back home, she has heat, hot water and electric - so all's good! :-)

Anyone whos car registration ran out in October has a one month extension apparenly the police are unaware.
Lesnery Ramirez November 05, 2012 at 02:02 AM
I don't think kids should go out trick or treating tomorrow. This is very upsetting. It is suppose to be my toddlers first Halloween and has been ruined. I'm just heart broken. It's just not safe. They should do it in a closed in environment. Anyways, since schools are closed what is the times to go out with the kids. Please give a notice soon.
julie moore November 05, 2012 at 02:14 AM
@ Dainty..thank you sooo very much!! I will check back in tomorrow
Mattie November 05, 2012 at 02:18 PM
I agree with you, I don't believe trick or treating should happen this year. Kids are resilient, they'll get over it. It's not Christmas for goodness sakes. People have lost homes, have evacuated, can't find places to buy gas, food or water, and yet we should worry about the little ones being "sad and disappointed" over trick or treat - really?? This would be a perfect time to teach children the idea of EMPATHY for others. The whole wide world isn't Candyland and Disney. Gather with a few neighbors and have a costume party / trick or treat at someone's house for the kids.... forget about going door to door. That is so ridiculous and selfish considering the extraordinary circumstances....
Cece November 05, 2012 at 05:51 PM
@Mattie- you are so right. It just isn't right to bring my toddlers door to door when I know there are people lacking on shelter, power, and heat.
dainty November 05, 2012 at 10:51 PM
I went to North Gateway. Homes are fine and electric is on.

Stanley Goscombe November 15, 2012 at 09:55 AM
Does anyone know whether Gorginio Drive was hit by Sandy? I have a friend who lives there and would like to know how she is. Communications were down the last time I sent an e-Mail and I know that the post office was closed so regular mails was not getting through. I am a friend from the UK and would appreciate some news. I wish you guys the best of everything in the clean-up and restoration of electricity and gas, etc., and sincerely hope that not too many people were injured or killed in the storm.
Stanley Goscombe November 15, 2012 at 03:44 PM
Hi Dainty, You seem like the right person to ask to check on people. If you have read my message about my friend (see below) maybe you could find out for me? My name is Stanley. I am English and am sending this from the UK. I have a friend on Gorgino Drive, her name is Gail Henry and I am worried that she is o.k. after hurricane Sandy hit your area. We have know each other for many years; she is like a big sister or long-lost cousine. She lived in England with her family about forty years ago. I came twice to NJ to visit with her a long time ago; then she lived in Sicklerville. (One of her daughters lives in Glendora - might they have been hit too?). If you can find out anything I would appreciate that very much - many, many thank yous! Stanley
