Toms River Approves $1.3 Million for Ortley Beach Dunes

Earle Asphalt Company won a $1.3 million bid to replenish dunes in Ortley Beach.

Toms River's Township Council approved on Tuesday a $1.3 million bid for Earle Asphalt Company of Farmingdale to replenish dunes in Ortley Beach after Hurricane Sandy eroded beaches in late October.

Earle's bid surpassed those provided by Eagle Paving Corp. and C.J. Hesse Inc., which submitted bids of $1.42 million and $1.47 million, respectively, according to a resolution unanimously approved by the council.

The contract term shall be for 30 days, effective immediately.

Who is picking up this bill? The federal government or the taxpayers of Toms River?

Ken, Good point...as a resident of Toms River; it better NOT be the taxpayers...

The way the taxpayers have been treated we will not forget the election in this town next year, ala recent school board. Anyone see any council folk in any ward? The Mayor does not even know what is going on. School board revisited next year for the local Ward elections. Ward 1 got hit, is Maruca playing "Whares Waldo"? Ward 2, 3 and 4 nada!

Because the existing dunes did so much to prevent damage this time around? I guess $1.3 mil is cheap compared to the houses behind them...

Of course US taxpayers will be paying for it, where else will the money come from. I bet dollars to donuts Earle Asphalt Company has "friends" in Toms River. Let the corruption begin !

Kinda closing the barn door after the horse gets free. The real question for the township committee is why didn't Ortley have an engineered beach like Seaside Park?
Chuck Lada November 14, 2012 at 02:56 PM
Edward, The article states that the contract was awarded to Earle because they were the low bidder. The corruption was taking place during the two week "emergency powers" period when the "friends of George" were getting sweetheart deals left and right. Why do you think they were keeping residents away from their homes for so long......Answer: THEY DIDN"T WANT TO GIVE UP THEIR EMERGENCY POWERS.

Why don't We have the Army Corps of engineers do the correct job once rather then have some asphalt company build our dunes. doesnt make any sense Mr & Mrs Legislators and Council members .. Wake up people..... Lets do it right and not throw good money into a bad plan......
JD November 14, 2012 at 03:13 PM
What a waste.... I don't believe Ortley or Dover North beaches had dunes to begin with... Everytime there is a storm the dunes have to be rebult... Just elevated the boardwalk to say 5-10 feet above high tide... then build a concrete wall alongside the boardwalk that goes 4ft above the elevation of the boardwalk. Therefore, when you walk the boardwalk you can view the ocean. Can't do that in Seaside Park with thier 20ft high dunes. The reason they are 20ft high and deep is due to erosion from storms so the build them high and deep to outlast a storm only to need to be rebuilt again.

The Army Corp of Engineers should be building the dunes NOT Earle. What a stupid decision with my tax dollars.

Probably the tax payers will once again be paying, Christie already said even with the 2% cap increases will happen above the cap due to extreme emergency. That was stated in the newspaper already. So not only are people fighting insurance companies and FEMA now they can expect a tax increase for the so called hard hit areas. Along with the Govenor havng second thoughts about cutting income tax as he proposed to do in the past. Sandy has brought disaster for everyone even if she didn't take your house the state probably will when we can't afford to pay the taxes.
