Toms River Falls Behind Lakewood as 8th Largest Town in NJ

However, Toms River population still growing, according to last Census

Upon review of the 2010 United States Census data, Toms River Township’s population saw a slight increase adding to a booming population increase for the entire Ocean County region.

According to the census data, Toms River Township’s 2010 population totaled 91,239, up 1,533 citizens or 1.7 percent from its year 2000 totals.

Despite the population increase, Toms River Township’s New Jersey state ranking in total citizenry dropped from its seventh place 2000 position to eighth behind neighboring Lakewood Township — whose population exploded 53.8 percent from 60,532 in 2000 to 92,843 in 2010.

Toms River Township’s other direct neighbor, Brick Township, saw an overall population decrease of 1,047 citizens to 75,072, down 1.4 percent.  Brick’s decrease bucks the trend of the three top ranked Ocean County townships as the only one to lose population since 2000.

Overall, Ocean County saw a 12.8 percent increase in total population since 2000, ranking as the second highest increase in New Jersey, marginally behind Gloucester County’s 13.2 percent increase over the past decade.
