Toms River Police Accepting Applications

Down 10 officers and with 150 applications in, the Toms River Police Department will continue to accept applications for the position of probationary police officer.

Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy said the department has already received notice from about 150 applicants since the position was advertised May 1.

He said the process will add candidates to the list for 2013, 2014, and 2015, as this is the first step of a long process.

"There's this, the written test, physical test," Mastronardy said. "The successful candidates for this would first be considered in January 2013."

Toms River is currently down 10 officers due to retirements, with more possible on the horizon, Mastronardy said.

He expects about 30 men and women will advance through the entire process. The application process happens every three years, he said. It creates a three-year list of police officer candidates. Over the next three years, the department is looking to fill some of the vacancies as the budget allows, but more vacancies could be possible due to retirements, said the police chief.

"Right now we anticipate numerous retirements, and are currently down by 10 officers," he said.

The Toms River Police Department will be accepting applications for the position of Probationary Police Officer through August 31.  Applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 34 unless currently enrolled in the New Jersey Police and Fire Pension System.  Applicants must possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or a minimum of 64 college credits plus; either two years active duty military experience or two years full-time regular police experience.

The police department will host an orientation/ information session regarding the hiring process on Wednesday August 1 at 7 p.m.  The orientation will take place at Toms River Intermediate North but attendance at the orientation is voluntary.
