Toms River to Honor Local Soldier Who Died in Afghanistan

A U.S. Army soldier from Toms River who died in Afghanistan in 2011 will be honored by the township on Friday.

James Harvey II, 23, died June 20, 2011 in the Ghazni province, just days after his family received his sergeant stripes in the mail for their son’s upcoming promotion.

Jimmy, as he was known, was born in Livingston and moved to Toms River in 2007. He joined the Army in January 2009 at the age of 21. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Parachutists Badge, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and The Army Service Ribbon. He was posthumously awarded The Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.

He had been assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 1st Infantry Division out of Fort Knox, Kentucky.

As part of the ceremony Friday, a sign recognizing his service will be placed on Church Road. The dedication will be held will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at 2025 Church Road, in front of the American Legion 129 building.

In the event of rain, tents will be provided for shelter.
