Traffic: Another Red Light Camera Up in Brick, Continued Lane Closures on Route 37 Bridge

Cameras recently installed at Route 70-Brick Boulevard intersection

Cameras and flash poles installed at the intersection of Route 70 and Brick Boulevard denote the coming of new red light cameras, which officials said are scheduled to start snapping pictures the end of the month.

The new cameras will target motorists who run the red light at the busy intersection where the two major roads come together. The cameras were approved in September.

But despite the fact that they've been installed, don't expect to be receiving any tickets in the mail just yet.

The cameras, owned by American Traffic Solutions of Arizona, are currently in a testing phase, according to Brick Township Business Administrator Scott Pezarras.

The testing phase should be complete by the end of the month, at which time the township will give the required legal notices that the cameras are active. After activation, the cameras will generate warning notices to scofflaw motorists for 30 days.

"They should be up and running, and issuing tickets, the first week of June," said Pezarras.

Plans to erect cameras at yet another intersection, Route 88 and Post Road, have been put off.

Brick Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis said additional accident data needs to be collected to comply with state regulations before cameras can be installed at that intersection.

Cameras have already been up and running at the intersections of Route 70 and Chambers Bridge Road and Brick Boulevard and Hooper Avenue for almost two years.

The cameras are allowed in select municipalities, including Brick, as part of a state pilot program.

Downtown Parking Deck closures continue

Installation of columns and steel will shutter sections of the three-deck downtown parking garage, located between Robbins and Horner streets, through May 30.

Township Engineer Bob Chankalian announced the following closures:

  • Through April 26: Half the upper deck closed. Sporadic closures to middle and lower levels.
  • April 30-May 30: Upper deck closed. Township employees will have limited access to the parking garage middle and lower levels during construction.

Lane Shifts Near Parkway 83 Project: Traffic cones and lane shifts will remain in place until further notice as construction continues on the Parkway Interchange 83 reconfiguration. The exit and entrance to parkway northbound from Route 166 is also affected. The stretch of Route 571 near Intermediate Way remains a heavy construction zone.

Route 37 Seaside Bridge Intermittent Lane Closures: Both spans of the Route 37 bridges will intermittently face lane closures as projects such as repainting and repair work continue. The state Department of Transportation project began late this winter and is expected to continue through the spring.

Repaving project moves along Vaughn, Verdant: Repaving crews have scheduled work along the side streets along Vaughn and Verdant, resulting in temporary road closures to the residential areas of some East Dover streets. The township project began along the Yellowbank Road corridor near Indian Hill and is now moving toward New Jersey Avenue and adjoining streets.
