Dec. 8, 1964: Voters Create Toms River Regional School District

Vote created a regional district for the towns of Beachwood, South Toms River, Pine Beach and Toms River

On December 8, 1964, voters decided to form a regional school district, called Toms River Regional, which would incorporate Toms River students but also serve students in Beachwood, Pine Beach and South Toms River.

Prior to that, student attended a district called the Toms River Consolidated School District, formed in 1949.

According to the Toms River Regional school district's history, the consolidated district represented the then-Dover Township and the Boroughs of Beachwood, Pine Beach and South Toms River in 1949.

"Previous to that, the School Board of Toms River accepted students on a tuition basis. As post-World War II growth began and new schools became necessary, the sending district arrangement became absolute. A number of sending districts did not join the new consolidated district," according to the history, here.

As a result, an arrangement was proposed to incorporate the towns not as sending districts but as part of a regional school district. The decision to form Toms River Regional was before voters in 1964.

In addition to affecting students in those towns, having a regional school district also affected taxpayers. Each of the towns have separate that make up the school district's budget.

In 1964, Toms River township was known as Dover Township, and voters there as well as voters from the boroughs of Beachwood, Pine Beach and South Toms River approved the formation of the Toms River Regional School District.

Dec. 8, 1964, the Toms River Regional school district was born, thanks to voters.
