Former Brick BOE Attorney Appointed by Toms River Board

Former Brick IT director also appointed to six-figure post in Toms River

The former Brick Township school district attorney has been appointed as a conflict litigation attorney in the Toms River Regional district.

The Brick-based law firm of Montenegro and Montenegro was appointed at a rate of $160 per hour to serve as counsel on an as-needed basis when the board's regular representative, the firm of Carluccio, Leone, Dimon, Doyle and Sacks, has a conflict in representing the district.

The firm was one of eight that responded to a request for qualifications from the board.

The Montenegro firm is considered to be aligned with county Democrats, as is the board's regular counsel.

Stephan Leone normally represents the board, and replaced longtime board attorney Thomas Monahan, part of the Republican-aligned Gilmore and Monahan firm that was ousted in January when a ticket of Democratic-aligned candidates took a majority of seats on the legally nonpartisan school board.

Montenegro was not the only former Brick school district associate to be appointed this week in Toms River. The Brick district's former director of information technology, Len Niebo, was appointed to the same position in Toms River for the remainder of the 2013-14 school year.

Niebo was appointed to the position with a salary of $132,500 starting Dec. 4, which will be prorated through June 30, 2014.
