Lacey Lineman Dubbed Mr. Touchdown as Cheerleaders Raise $1K for Food Bank

The undefeated Lacey Lions will be competing in the South JerseyGroup IV semifinals on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 1 p.m.

Lacey Township High School lineman Joe Elefante has been dubbed Mr. Touchdown after the varsity cheerleading squad’s annual fundraiser for the Lacey Food Bank.

Harold Peters of the Food Bank said he was “overwhelmed” by the team’s donation of $1,000.

Each year, the cheerleaders campaign for their chosen senior football player by selling votes for a dollar each, Coach Jennifer O’Boyle said. The cheerleaders ask for support throughout the community and tables were also set up at games where spectators can vote.

The fundraiser has raised almost $3,000 in the past three years.

Cheerleader Savannah Gray campaigned for Elefante and raised the most money at $112. Gray participated “to help the food bank,” she said.

“It’s awesome especially because I’m a lineman and I don’t score any touchdowns,” Elefante said.

“He doesn’t get enough credit,” O’Boyle said.

The varsity football team is currently undefeated with a record of 10-0. The Lions will compete in the South Jersey Group IV semifinals at home on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 1 p.m. against Kingsway Regional.
