At 10:30 a.m. May 16, the college announced it would close to address the water main break for the remainder of the day. At about 12:30 p.m., an email from the college’s Campus Cruiser email service was circulated saying the campus would reopen for evening classes at 5 p.m.

Throughout the closure, security personnel were on hand at the entrances of the College Drive parking lots to alert visitors, staff and students to the closure. Electronic signs at the campus entrance blinked with ongoing messages about the closure.

Online, the college’s website also posted updates, and students posted questions and comments to the college’s facebook about what to do next. Several posts from students expressed frustration at the rescheduling, in both that the original message was an all-day closure and that the semester would now end Tuesday on the Toms River campus.

The Manahawkin campus was unaffected by the alert and the nearby roadways of College Drive, Buckwald Bridge and Hooper Avenue were also unaffected.
