OCC Students Net State Business Competition Awards

More than half of state trophies went to Ocean County College

How do students studying at to become entrepreneurs stack up against their New Jersey peers?

 “We took home more than half the state awards’’ at a recent New Jersey leadership conference of Phi Beta Lambda at Mercer County Community College, explained Frank Gorman, the OCC student who is the state president of that organization.

“That was more than any other two- or four-year college,’’ Gorman told the OCC Board of Trustees.

The competition pitted OCC business students against those from 15 other New Jersey colleges in 35 events.

The OCC chapter received the Gold Seal and Outstanding Chapter awards. Professor Katherine Dillion was named the outstanding adviser. Dr. Virginia Reilly was named the business professional of the year. Dean Dean LaBollita was designated  the business person of the year. Gorman was named to Who’s Who in PBL and is running for regional vice president. Kathryn Trachta won recognition as an outstanding officer and for the OCC scrapbook. Trevor Woolley won an award as an outstanding member.

Gorman was named Mr. Future Business Executive and took top honors for his small business management plan. Kristina Dugan was named Ms. Future Business Executive and finished second in the job interview competition.

Trachta’s small business management plan was rated the best in the competition.  Breanna Burns took top honors for hospitality management. Rebecca Tray was first in job interview skills and third in hospitality management. Alex Daudier took a first for his small business management plan and a third in third in impromptu speaking.

Raymond Brophy won the public speaking competition. Edward Day won the marketing concepts competition and took second in management concepts. Woolley took a second in accounting principles. James Lennon was second in project management and third in business communication. Nekiesha Hatch finished second in client services competition. Chris Marzella was second in computer concepts. Constantine Siampos finished second in sales presentation.

The winners of the state competition move on to the national Phi Beta Lambda competition in Orlando, Fla., in June.
