School Lunch Prices Set to Increase

Prices must increase because of federal mandate, according to school board committee

Prices for lunches at Toms River schools are set to increase in the upcoming school year.

As mandated by the federal Paid Lunch Equity requirement, school districts with meal prices under $2.59—which includes Toms River—must raise prices, according to the school board’s Budget and Finance Committee

Because of the mandate, 2013-14 meal prices in Toms River Regional schools will increase to $2.25 for elementary lunch and $2.50 for intermediate and high school lunch, according to the committee.

The Budget and Finance Committee, chaired by board member Joe Torrone, discussed the mandate during a meeting last week.

Even with the increases, meal prices in Toms River schools remain 60 to 70 percent lower than the maximum prices allowed by the United States Department of Agriculture, according to the committee.
