Toms River Schools Closed Through Friday

Facilities used as shelters

Toms River Regional Schools will remain closed through at least Friday due to the massive effects of Hurricane Sandy.

Through an automated message to parents and staff, Toms River Regional announced yesterday that schools would be closed Thursday and Friday.

Three schools are being used as evacuation shelters for the storm. Evacuees have filled Toms River High School North in the Pine Belt Arena, Toms River High School East and Toms River Intermediate East.

At other school facilities, a loss of power continued through Thursday, one of tens of thousands of JCP&L customers without power in Toms River.

Facilities are also seeing damage such as felled trees on school property. Road conditions at bus stops throughout town continue to present an emergency situation. At Toms River Intermediate East, the Bennett sports complex has collapsed.

No snow days exist in the current school calendar.

The school district website remained inoperable since Tuesday evening.
