TR South Wrestlers, Brick Memorial's Ghione, Lacey's Knapp Reach Semifinals

NJSIAA championships continuing in Atlantic City

Toms River South's BJ Clagon, Kevin Corrigan and Ken Theobold all advanced to the semifinals of the NJSIAA Individual Wrestling Championships on Saturday morning, putting the trio one step closer to state titles.

Also advancing to the semifinals were sophomore Joe Ghione of Brick Memorial and senior Lex Knapp of Lacey.

Corrigan, a junior, improved to 39-0 when he earned a 3-1 decision over Marc Mastropietro of Hasbrouck Heights in the 113-pound weight class. He will face DePaul Catholic freshman David McFadden (36-2) in the semifinals later today.

Clagon (39-0), a junior who's considered by most the favorite in the 138-pound class, scored an 18-6 major decision over Jorge Lopez of Delbarton and faces John Boyle, a senior from Rutherford who's 39-1.

Theobold, a senior 145-pounder, pinned Nick Lospinosa of Brearley at the 4:50 mark in the quarterfinals. He faces top-seeded T.J. Miller of Camden Catholic in the semifinals.

Ghione (29-4) beat AJ Vindici of Randolph 6-5 on Saturday morning and faces Carl Buttitta, a sophomore from JFK-Iselin who's 37-3.

Knapp (41-0) scored a takedown in the closing seconds for a 5-3 decision over Camden Catholic's Jeff Miller and will wrestle Roy Lucas of St. Joseph of Hammonton, a junior who's 38-1.

Meanwhile, alive in the consolation bracket are Richard Lewis of Toms River East, Central Regional's Jalen Ramos, Manchester's Jesse Meaney and Matt Moore of Brick Memorial. All four have earned a place on the medal stand.

Lewis, a junior, lost Friday night in the prequarterfinals to Pequannock's R.J. DeGeorge, a senior. He earned a 9-2 decision over Steven Schneider of Emerson Park Ridge and beat freshman Jimmy Schuitema of Phillipsburg in the second round, 8-6. Lewis (34-4) faces Katon Washington of Montclair this evening.

Ramos (37-5) was pinned by top-seeded Anthony Ashnault of South Plainfield in the 126-pound quarterfinals but bounced back to beat Connor Burkert of St. Peter's Prep 6-3. He faces Justin Colon (41-2), a senior from Belleville.

Meaney, who was knocked into the 132-pound consolation bracket on Friday night by Connor Melde of Bergen Catholic, beat Jackson Memorial's Brad Royle, the Region VI champion 5-4, then pinned R.J. DeGeorge of Pequannock in 27 seconds. The senior, who's 35-3, faces Maaziah Bethea, a Trenton Central sophomore, in the evening bout.

Moore (19-3) lost to Haddonfield's Carson Stack, a senior, in the quarterfinals, 5-2, but beat Anthony Tancs of Brearley, 7-2, to stay alive. Moore, a junior, faces sophomore Bryan Dobzanski of Delsea, who's 35-2.
