Golf Course Reopens as Officials Look to Replace Tee Time Reservation System

Snow buried the municipal golf course on North Bay Avenue

Feel like taking a swing on the greens? Bey Lea Golf Course, the 18-hole municipal public golf course, opened a week and a half ago, said Eric J. Schubiger, director of the town's Recreation Department.

That’s after a brutal winter dumped more than 35 inches of snow since on Toms River, including its golf course on North Bay Avenue.

“After the grounds crew shoveled it out, the golf course opened a week and a half ago,” Schubiger said, adding that there were no greens fees paid in the 30 days after the Dec. 26 blizzard.

“With the first couple of warm days, people are chomping at the bit to get out there, but we’re being careful as the grounds recover from the winter,” Schubiger said at this week’s Toms River Township Recreation Commission meeting.

In addition to the shoveling, the recreation department also completed routine maintenance on the golf course irrigation system, in order to adjust it to water use restrictions now in place, Schubiger said.

He hopes to next tee off on the system the department uses to reserve tee times for patrons. The current system is outdated and needs to be replaced, he said.

“You can’t play if you don’t have a good system for reserving tee times,” Schubiger said.

According to the township website, golfers currently use the website usegolf.com or call an automated phone service at 732-736-8889 to reserve tee times at Bey Lea.

“We need to find something else and once we do, we’ll let the golfers know,” Schubiger said.
