Toms River East Little Leaguers Claim Championship

For the second year in a row the little leaguers from the Toms River East American All Stars squad are the New Jersey District 18 Champions.

As they did last year, the 12-year-old all stars representing Toms River East Little League defeated their cross-town rivals, the Toms River Little League All Stars, by a score of 4 to 1, a team parent said. Managed by Denny Munson, the team’s next game is in Spring Lake Sunday night.

“Congratulations again to the boys from TRELL for a commanding run highlighted by an 8-0 record for the tournament,” said team parent Ben Danzi.

The win was spearheaded by a masterful pitching display by Dougie Pombo, who Danzi said was “practically un-hittable.”

Mike Wardell then took to the hill in the 5th, sealing the victory with two scoreless innings. Offensively, the East All Stars were led by Danny Clemente and his two home runs, Danzi said.

The game was a special occasion for Max Rivas, who hit the first home run of his young career, Danzi said. Rounding out the offense was Gabe Driscoll with a perfect 3-for-3 at bat.
