County Tests Bathing Beaches for Bacteria

Results of recent tests of freshwater, saltwater beaches in Ocean County

The Ocean County Health Department this summer continues its testing for two kinds of bacteria to make sure they pose no threat to swimmers.

Water samples are taken at some of the beaches by the Ocean County Health Department and tested at the Ocean County Utilities Authority lab.

Weekly testing will be done throughout the summer bathing season. Saltwater beaches are tested on Monday, and fresh water sites on Tuesday. When too many fecal coliform or enterococcus are found, a second round of tests is done. A second high reading leads to an order to close the beach until the bacteria drops to a safe level.

The latest water tests are up now on the county website. Visit here to download the latest .pdf file of the tests.

If there is a certain amount of bacteria per 100 milliliters of water, the health department takes daily samples until the bacteria is down to an acceptable level for swimming. Until then, they close the affected beach to swimming.
