Charity Volleyball Tourney to Benefit Oceans of Love Saturday

Saint Barbara's will host tournament and gift auction

A charity volleyball tournament and gift auction hosted by the Ocean County Volleyball Club at will give 100 percent of the proceeds to Oceans of Love.

Organizers to the Saturday event have sold out the spots available for teams, with 16 teams signed up to play starting at 9 a.m. in the parish athletic center.

Meanwhile, from 1 p.m. onward, a gift auction and 50/50 raffle will open in the church banquet hall. Admission is $5.

With $125 for teams to register, plus proceeds from admission, the gift auction and concession sales, the event stands to be a successful fundraiser for Oceans of Love, said Scott Binkley, director of the volleyball club.

Oceans of Love focuses on giving back to Ocean County families affected by cancer.

“This is our first time having the tournament,” Binkley said. “We’re glad to have a sizeable event for Oceans of Love, selling out the tournament.”

He said he hopes the gift auction will add to the fun. Prizes so far include a stay at a bed and breakfast, a signed NFL jersey and a flat-screen television.

Though it’s too late to sign up to play, folks looking to contribute can still donate prizes to the auction, right up to the 1 p.m. start of that portion of the day, he said.

Admission tickets, and auction and raffle tickets will be available at the event.

The teams who have signed up are diverse, and have come out all in the name of helping out a local charity.

“It’s a co-ed tournament. There’s teams of some of our girls, but there’s all types. The Brickhouse Bar has a team. There’s teams of friends, high schoolers, older folks, people that the club signed up. It’s a real good turnout,” Binkley said.

Though this is the first installment of the event, Binkley said he foresees it growing and is encouraged by the success so far.

“We wanted to give back, the girls thought this was a good way to do it,” Binkley said. Saint Barbara’s was essential to the success, he said, as they donated the use of the space and are also donating the concession proceeds to the charity.

The Ocean County Volley Ball Club is also still welcoming players to participate in its league play, with several travel teams. For more information, email oceancountyvolleyballclub@gmail.com
