Barrier Island Beaches of Brick, Toms River and Seaside Swept Clean By Volunteers

Volunteers along the Ocean County shoreline made a clean sweep of its beaches Saturday.

The twice yearly event sponsored by Clean Ocean Action again has made a difference to our communities, not only by picking up bottles, cans and cigarette butts and plastic sheeting and volumes of bottle caps, but by recording the data to what was found on the beach.

All the volunteers were warned at Brick beach III by beach captain Marissa Magula and Jen Pati not to pick up medical debris or needles for the safty of everyone.

A heavy turnout of volunteers came from Comcast as part of their Comcast Cares Day, which was lead by Dave McMullen, a sales manager for the company, and assisted by Dave Marino, a sales supervisor for Comcast.

The Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts were out in numbers as well as many volunteers from the surrounding community and the mainland.

In Ortley Beach at the 3rd avenue Beach, Toms River Township Councilman (Ward 3) Jeff Carr was out doing his share. Carr stated that he believes in leading by example and was happy to be able to be a part of keeping our beaches clean.

In Seaside Heights as well as Brick Beach III there were representatives from The Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science.

John Sieb, Vice President of financial management for Prudential, as part of the Prudential Cares Team stated he was glad to be able to share the day with his daughter Cameron who by her own admission is 11 and 3/4 years old. They made a dynamic duo and an impact on cleaning the beach.

The day may have started out a bit slow with fog and cool temperatures but ended up being a magnificant finish to a day of giving back to the community and keeping our beaches clean.
