East Dover Fire Company Doesn't Just Fight Fires

Fire company to hold its annual Oktoberfest event Oct. 1

Aside from fighting fires, the crew at the East Dover Volunteer Fire Company contributes its time to help the less fortunate and put on events, such as its upcoming Oktoberfest.

Live bands, German beers, a barbecue buffet (with authentic Oktoberfest fair), and activities for kids is what attendees of the Fire Company’s Annual Oktoberfest -- being held on Saturday, Oct. 1 -- can expect.

“This event is one of the major fundraisers for the fire company to help offset costs of every day expenses of operating the building,” said John Salemi, president of the East Dover Fire Company.

It begins at 3 p.m. and will run through 10 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in advance from any East Dover Fire Company Member at the firehouse on Tuesday and Thursdays evenings or by calling (732) 270-1516.

Salemi said the East Dover Volunteer Fire Company #4 proudly serves approximately 27,000 residents living in the East Dover section of the Township of Toms River.

“In addition, the East Dover Fire Company responds to other sections of Toms River on a frequent basis depending upon the type of call,” Salemi added. “We operate out of one station that protects a primarily residential area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a 100% volunteer status.”

In addition to fighting fires, the firefighters give their time to help the less fortunate members of their community.

“For the past ten years we have been proud to be associated with Oceans of Love -- a group that helps families of young children with childhood cancer,” Salemi said.

In regards to Oceans of Love, Salemi added that for various holidays, the firefighters reach out to children.

“Every Christmas firefighters escort Santa to the homes of these children to deliver food and gifts  to them to brighten up their lives. They additionally do this at Easter time where Santa is replaced by the Easter Bunny,” he said. “At Thanksgiving, food baskets are taken to homes of the less fortunate to insure they have something to enjoy the spirit of the season.”
