@Mac I didn't think you were picking on me, I just wanted you to know I didn't give Ocean County aRead More pass. @all--It's about time NJ has to think about really consolidating school districts! We presently have 296 school districts, 398 public high schools, 33,246 full time teachers and 404,165 students h.s. students enrolled. The politicians will never let this happen because most of the political patronage jobs are in the supervisory positions. ….and so are these huge retirement packages. It would be the sensible thing to consolidate not only to save money, but for the sake of education(we need a more cohesive curriculum). But we're in NJ and it ain't gonna happen!

We don't live in a theocracy, religion should not be promoted by the government. You can pray anyRead More time you want any place you want. No one is stopping you from going to your church, temple, mosque or synagogue. You are free to practice your given religion as much as you want. The Pledge of Allegiance is not mandated by the Constitution, it's only been around since 1892 and the "under God" part has been around since 1954. In my opinion, the "under God" part should be eliminated because we should separate religion from a publically funded entity such as a public school. Private schools and religious schools can do whatever they want, they are not even obligated to say the Pledge of Allegiance in many of these private schools. Very few nations even have a Pledge of Allegiance.

Educators are always the most liberal of any out there and always the closest to any of thisRead More political correctness. most college prof's are communist and teach that ideology in their classes and payback anyone who opposes them with a bad grade. Brian, I could care less you were a Marine, for some reason you Marines all think you are special from any other serviceman out there. Whatever you father in laws and grandfathers service was to our country it was not your own, and you should not shame them by buying into this political correctness and being a pawn of your union. I should be able to take my tax portion to the school system and apply it to a catholic or private school of my choice. Then we will all truly have a say in our childrens education. But your union opposes that because it would collapse the public school systems as people opt out.

Wow, WMS826, you should see a doctor about that chip on your shoulder. Nothing you say has anyRead More factual base at all. Not even worth debating with you at all. You've got issues with everyone who's not you. Sad way to go about life.
Andy Schmidt April 24, 2014 at 05:36 pm
WMS826 >>take my tax portion to the school system and apply it to a catholic or private schoolRead More of my choice << Humans form societies so that we combine our different strengths and end up with something more than the sum of the pieces. By members giving up a share of their own possessions, they are supporting even the weakest members and in return get to benefit from whatever unique other talents THOSE can contribute. Maybe Gutenberg wasn't a great deer hunter, but he figured out how to print books. The whole point of taxes is that we all contribute a certain portion of income for the COMMON good. You don't get to pick that "YOUR" property tax only fixes YOUR roads. That "YOUR" state tax only builds bridges YOUR plan to travel over, that "YOUR" federal income tax only pays for medical research in illnesses YOU suffer from on that particular day - or YOUR taxes go to YOUR private school. In "this great nation" you DO have the option to move to a smaller house to afford private school tuition, or to move yourself from the mail room to the executive floor of your business. But those are not entitlements you earn by being a fellow taxpayer, those are individual perks you earn based on your personal achievements. Personal responsibility - not just where it's convenient for you!

This new board is destroying the district. We've gone from bad to worse. There are so many thingsRead More I hear from educators about the problems with the buildings, such as falling debris and mold - yes, mold! Your children are learning in a MOLD filled environment. However, rather than fix the problem, they bring in Gaffney to spend 3 years worth of budget for failing curriculum programs in less than a year's time. Way to go, TRBOE! Please, people, vote them out.

Marie, why are you conditioned to think that someone that needs pay more taxes because they have aRead More larger house? Why do you think that is fair? Why do you think that if someone spends money keeping their house nice, they need to be penalized with higher taxes? Shouldn't someone should be allowed to keep their house nice? So according to you, it is fair if I buy a house and let the paint go and let the place degenerate and I can have my taxes lowered. you are brilliant.
John Santaella April 22, 2014 at 04:16 pm
I plead the 2nd tchk tchk it doesn't work that way. Ask your town assessor about that.
Marie Intili April 22, 2014 at 05:49 pm
I didnt say you have to pay more taxes if you have a bigger house! Or a nicer house...you areRead More taking my words out of context! A two family home that is zoned for two families should only have two families living in it! Not 10 families! Thats all I said...I said nothing about letting your paint go or getting penelized with a higher tax because of size.....only what its zoned for!

@careless fills Wait...so because you purchased (or update, added on etc) a large home, andRead More expensive home at that (because if your paying $10,000 a year in property taxes than its a large, and high appraised home!)I should feel sorry for you...? Really...Lifes about choices my friend and I did not bight off more than I could chew. My taxes are half that and I live in a moderate middle class home, no shack, but also no mansion either. The average home in Toms River is around $225,000 which is around $1,300 in Municipal taxes a year (and yes I know school taxes and county taxes are also added to that) I just checked it! Your either not telling the truth or your home is extremely large hence that's your deal! I HAVE NO LOVE for the politicians in this Town nor do I for the school board due to all the corruption! With that said my argument was about the guys salary. I do not care about the so called 1000 public workers living in TR, really I do not care. I am just tired of the bitching we all wanted change and now we got it and we still complain. Give it a rest already....If they pay him $100,00 or $500,000 a year its not going to bankrupt me, you, or anyone else....that's my argument. Hell, I would pay the guy $250,00 even $300,000 as long as Ritacco is gone and he comes in and cleans this School district up, rids the Political Horse crap and appointments. I am going to sit back and hope he cleans up this mess its been a long time coming....Lets just stop complaining already! I am trying to be POSITIVE for once......LOL i guess we will see if I made the right decision.
jerseytomato March 18, 2014 at 07:03 am
letsgetreal - It's called, 'Financial prudence.' Whatever happened to hiring an employee andRead More asking him to prove himself at a certain salary, with the stipulation written in his contract that if he succeeds, then a salary increase is provided? Being mindful of taxpayer dollars is not only prudent - it's smart business. But, as we are talking about educators and not business owners, the old saying is applicable: "Those who can - do. Those who cannot - teach.' As to the Ritacco debacle - Ritacco wasn't the only dishonest employee; therein lies the problem. To think Mr. Healy will single handedly rid us of 'political horse crap appointments' is a fine example of misplaced responsibility AND wishful thinking. I'm sure neither your sentence - or sentiment will be found anywhere in his job description. You can be sure - Mr. Healy will not go against those who have given him this position.

Schools in general is nothing but fakes. Not even close to accurate. To many reasons to list. YouRead More have to many dishonest people involved in the outcome in changes that shouldn't be. Yes, schools play to make it look one way that is not even close to what it should be. They rig the outcome to make their school look good for certain students who they might have a connection with in some way. You can have students who rank higher in lower level classes that are not even close in comparison that has no business being 2 or 3 in a class.

Hey Joe-90% tax rate existed with a number of signifigant loopholes that resulted in a nominal taxRead More rate in the mid 40s for the highest earners...stop getting your talking points from MSNBC and think for yourself. and even if you took every dollar from the top 10% of earners in this nation, we would still have a deficit...spending is the issue, not revenue....do you get that fact or does your hatred for the wealthy cloud your ability to digest reality...
Joe R March 15, 2014 at 08:51 am
Hey SH, in the 1950s, the top marginal tax rate was 91% and the effective tax rate was about 51%Read More after the loopholes. Oh, so we don't have loopholes today??!? Ha, ha, ha. SH Resident March 15, 2014 at 07:02 pm

Jim, Geez you are the one who can't be that ignorant yourself. You couldn't be more wrong and inRead More denial. Nothing jives with any of these tests. They compare SAT's and some schools average 1535 total and think that is good. I think that score is unacceptable. Just a little over what the state requires. You have schools who some considered top schools bragging how great they are getting average sat's at 1545. @Speedz..You are right on and I agree it is hard to figure out what makes sense versus real.

Here's what I measure when considering schools- and this applies directly to Montclair and allRead More districts- Has my child been taught to be an independent thinker, an active problem solver, willing to take on challenges, work as part of a team, and the confidence to work independently? Has my child met a teacher who has motivated him/her to be their best academic self and created a lifelong learner? That's how success is measured. Numbers/statistic can be tugged, pulled, hidden, adjusted, and manipulated. The cold hard facts that your child has the attributes previously listed above is the true measure. That's done here in Montclair and other districts in New Jersey and beyond- or at least it was true before the core curriculum standards and the broads invaded.
