Viewing for Ana Kopack to be Held Friday in Bayville

Grief counselors will be available at Mill Pond School for students and parents from 3:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday

The viewing for Anastasia Kopack, 10, of Lanoka Harbor, who lost her battle with cancer on Wednesday, will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28 in Bayville. Kopack passed away at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia, according to her obituary. She was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer, in March 2011. She traveled to St. Christopher’s often for treatments. Kopack had graduated from Lanoka Harbor Elementary School, where she played the trumpet with her school band, her obituary said. She was a member of St. Pius X Roman Catholic Church, a part of their religious education program and the youth choir group. She was also a member of Girl Scout Troop #264. People are remembering …

Obituary: Chester R. Swistock, 78

Swistock lived in Howell, Freehold, and Toms River. He was an Army Veteran and avid golfer.

Chester R. Swistock, 78, of Bayville, died on Monday, Sept. 10 at Meridian Sub acute Rehabilitation Center in Wall. Swistock was born in Moran, PA and was raised in Chesterfield, PA. He had lived in Elizabeth, Old Bridge, Howell, Freehold, and Toms River before moving to Bayville in 2012. Swistock was a salesman for Whelan Pontiac in Freehold before retiring in 1997. He was a U.S. Army veteran, an avid golfer and was a horse racing fan that enjoyed the Freehold Raceway and loved trips to Atlantic City. Swistock was predeceased by his wife, Nancy in 2008. He is survived by three sons, Patrick Gagliano and his wife, Maria of Freehold, John Gagliano and his wife, Francine of Howell, and Keith Swistock and his wife, Lisa of Bayville; nine …

Former Jackson Mayor, local Realtor will run against longtime incumbents

A newly chosen Democrat ticket for Ocean County freeholder will pit former Jackson mayor and local attorney Joseph Grisanti and Beachwood Realtor Patricia Barndt against Republican incumbents John C. Bartlett, Jr. and Gerry P. Little. The November race saw changes after Democrats George Cevasco and Bonnie Verga withdrew as candidates. Kevin Barron, chairman of the Candidate Screening Committee for the Ocean County Democrats, said the pair withdrew for personal reasons. "We appreciate their interest and are sorry they weren't able to run, but we are excited and energized about Patricia Barndt and Joseph Grisanti," Barron said. Longtime Police Chief Clement Dies at Home

Police Headquarters renamed in his honor one year ago

A man credited with modernizing the police force as the township population swelled, and who earned national accolades, has died at home. Richard C. Clement, a longtime police chief for the township, was 88. Toms River Mayor Thomas Kelaher confirmed Clement died at home of natural causes at 2 a.m. Tuesday. The mayor announced the news at Tuesday's township council meeting, describing a man who was essential to crafting a police force that was recognized nationwide for its technology, law enforcement and community service. Clement earned many accolades during his time as police chief. It was nearly a year ago that the police headquarters were renamed in Clement's honor. One Year Later, Fallen Marine's Smile Remembered

Scholarship programs established for Nicholas Ott keep his memory alive

It's one of the first things those who knew Nicholas Ott seem to mention.  "He always had a smile on his face," said Jill Ocone, Ott's junior-year English teacher at Manchester Township High School. "Everyone talks about his smile," said Annie Sullivan, a friend who went through middle and high school with Ott.  One year ago, on Aug. 10, 2011, the 23-year-old U.S. Marine Corporal from Manchester lost his life while he was conducting combat operations in Afghanistan's Helmand province. As part of remembering Ott, a 2006 graduate of Manchester Township High School, a memorial fund was created in his name. Medical Marijuana Patient Registry Begins in Ocean County

Three doctors on list for Toms River

The Medical Marijuana Program Patient Registry begins today in New Jersey, as the Department of Health allows qualified patients and their caregivers to apply for identification cards. “The Department has made every effort to make the process as user friendly as possible,” said Health Commissioner Mary E. O’Dowd in a news release. “Registered physicians have had access to the system since July to become familiar with it and have their questions answered.” The department has a list of more than 100 physicians, including three in Ocean County, authorized to recommend medical marijuana to patients. All three are in Toms River: Patients and their doctors can register through the Department of Health medical marijuana registration website. …

Seaside Heights Honors Former Councilman, Long-time Firefighter

Thomas Reutter, a 73-year member of the volunteer squad, died on July 17

Thomas Reutter spent eight decades volunteering in his hometown of Seaside Heights, giving time as a firefighter and a councilman. On Tuesday, Reutter was honored for his service, as the Seaside Heights Volunteer Fire Department held a formal funeral procession through the borough to allow the department and the town's residents to pay tribute to him. Reutter, a 73-year member of the department and a 27-year member of the Borough Council, died July 17 at the age of 96. On Tuesday, his casket, covered by an American flag, was transported from Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home in Toms River out Route 37 to the borough he had called home since 1938. Reutter was born in Philadelphia and moved to Seaside when he married Dorothy, his wife of 59 …

East Dover Fire Co. Mourns Former Chief

Richard P. Einwechter, 82, died June 27

A longtime member of East Dover Fire Company and the Toms River Fire Commissioners died of natural causes June 27. Richard P. Einwechter, Sr, age 82, of Toms River, passed away peacefully on Wednesday at VanDyke Hospice of Community Medical Center in Toms River. Born in Philadelphia, Penn., he resided in Pleasantville before moving to Toms River in 1959. He was employed as a Station Foreman with Dover Township Municipal Utilities Authority for 37 years before his retirement. He served his country in the US Navy during Word War II and then re-enlisted in the US Army and was Honorably Discharged in 1948. He was a communicant of St. Justin's Roman Catholic Church in Toms River. He was a loyal life member of the East Dover Volunteer Fire …

Margaret B. “Peg” Hill passed away on June 23 after a brief illness. Peg was born on March 26, 1921 in Newark, N.J. Known as an active member of the community throughout her 91 years, Peg earned two college degrees during WWII, worked as a longtime school teacher and was very active in St. Luke's parish and other civic groups. She was the daughter of Stella and August Begerow who owned Begerow’s Florist in Newark. She graduated from Weequahic High School, Newark, and received her BA from Georgian Court University and her Masters Degree from New York University. She lived in Belmar and Lakewood before moving to the Green Island section of Toms River in 1965. Peg taught home economics at the Lakewood Middle School for 23 years retiring in …

Catherine King, 74, of Holiday City section of Toms River passed away at home on Sunday, June 17.  Catherine was born in New York City, NY and had lived in Brooklyn, NY before moving to Toms River in 2005. She was a payroll clerk for Quaker Sugar Co in Brooklyn NY. Catherine is survived by a brother, Joseph King.
