The responsibilities of the Army National Guard based in Toms River is to provide support for state emergencies such as floods and snow. The National Guard provided community assistance during the flood in Bound Brook in 1999, the re-construction of the Forked River bridge, and was an activated transportation unit during the 1995 flood in Point Pleasant. It has cleaned towns after natural disasters as well as rescued people. This is a mobilized base where units were deployed to Iraq in 2004-2005, Germany in 2004-2006, and another tour in Iraq in 2008-2009. The base lost four soldiers during the tour in Iraq in 2004-2005. Services provided at this facility includes the Toms River armory; Family Assistance Center (FAC); and recruiting staff for Army, National Guard, and active duty components. This facility is also used for shows and events. Dog, tools, and clothing shows have been hosted at this location as well as a circus and various job fairs. The building is also used for receptions and candlelight vigils for fallen soldiers. Local residents can rent the building out. The Toms River Army National Guard also has the program, American Recreational Military Services (ARMS) in which people can make donations that will be sent to deployed troops. Donations are packed every Tuesday from 10am to 2pm.
